Hey all I'm looking for a thread on how to change the settings in XP so that unneeded shit doesn't run on start up. I got a lot of stuff that I don't need running, running and I don't know how to change it so that this stuff won't run when I start up my computer. I saw a thread on it in the last two days or so, but I didn't tag it like I thought I did, and now I can't find it.

start>run
Type in MSCONFIG
Change settings as you desire.
Or
start>all programs>startup
Or
start>control panel>add remove programs> remove unwanted programs.

If it still runs at startup.
Click cntrl/alt/delete and look for the unwanted program in the processes list with your user name next to them.
Right click and end process tree.
Good Luck.

Thanks. I was just going to do the end processes thing but than i realised that I really don;t know what all would be safe to end and what wouldn't be.

Usually it is just an abreviated name in the task manager.

MS Messenger = msmsgr
Outlook Express = msimn
Internet Explorer = iexplorer
desktop/related menus=explorer
Usually it is good to avoid things that are next to system.

in MSCONFIG you can uncheck everything and reboot. XP will load only what it needs to start up. Another thing to play with is the services. (service.msc in run box) but be carefull with those if your not used to it.

the real way to stop services is by editing it through the Services Plug in

Start-> Run -> Services.msc

Stop services you dont need from running at startup.
