At the moment, I'm contemplating another Nissan Maxima which has been good to me. (2000 model with 100k+ miles and no major problems.) I'm also looking at the competitors, any suggestions FROM ACTUAL OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE ONLY PLEASE!

This is an easy one. Don't get a bloated 04-05 Maxima. Get an Infiniti G-35 if you have a dealer. 1/4 mile in the 14's. Mucho top speed and more.
M4-AK |

I owned a Honda Accord until about a year ago. Traded it in for my new truck and regretted it ever since. I just replaced it with a used Civic to get me to work. I swear by Hondas, can't go wrong.
My fiancee has always driven Honda Accords - and the only other car she would trade it for is an Infinity G35. We had an old accord that had over 150K miles and ran smooth as you could imagine.

My wife drives a '93 V6 Camry purchased new. Other than maintenance items such as tires , brakes, hoses, belts, etc, the total cost for "broken" parts, two radio knobs, is under $5.
When the time comes we will likely replace it with another Camry or an Avalon. |
My wife and I have owned Nissans and Hondas, but not the ones you listed. Hard to go wrong with vehicles made by either company. Toyotas are just as good.
I drive a 96 VW Passat TDI (diesel). Sedan sized vehicle and gets 45 mpg. If you can find a Passat TDI these days, hit it. They are only importing a few of them and they are going fast.
Edited to add: 191,000 miles and no major problems. |

My wife has gotten great service from her Toyota Camry, although it's a 4 banger. The only thing she ever complained about was having to do the scheduled maintenance that costs a couple of hundred bucks each time. Toyota supposedly will void the warranty if you don't do the maintenance. I think she said the last maintenance cost about $400.00...
My step-daughter drives a Nissan Altima w/ the 6 cylinder in it. Haven't heard any complaints from her... I'm thinking about buying a used Toyota Corolla to fight the high cost of gasoline. |
Lincoln LS. Sure it's not a listed choice but damned nice for the money if you buy a year end clearance.

My girlfriend drives an 01 Accord V6.. REAL nice car, and it gets up and goes. All the options, very very nice.
My mother drives an 01 Accord EX (4-cyl). Good mileage, and enough engine to be plenty effective. I drive an 01 Civic EX (4-cyl manual). Basic, reliable transportation that hasn't ever failed me, and 410+ mi out of 13 gallons. Great car for the $$ and lowest cost of ownership as reported by consumer reports or some car rag or something. Hondas are excellent vehicles, and tend to rate higher than Nissans on mileage and reliability. YMMV |
Already got that, but I can't afford to drive it everywhere |

Nope/None. I have never owned an import. |

You have mail...

I just bought a Honda Accord V6. This is the fifth Accord in the family and all have gone over 250k in our hands, the only exceptions being my new baby and my wife's 94 with 190k.
The new V6 is an absolute rocketship. It is the most honest 240hp I have experienced in a new car. My mileage has been 27 highway, 21 city and I am a leadfoot. I got 19 for one tank where the car was usually either floored or braking the whole time. I have a Bronco II and a Jeep CJ for fun. The Honda is for commuting. |
Have you considered the new Dodge Neon SRT4 or a Ford Focus SVT. Neither will get as good of MPG as the Honda or Toyota, but they are quicker/ fun to drive. The Neon even more so.
I think the local news said some model Toyotas have a tax deduction dew to certain models having great MPG. |
My wife has a 93 Camry. Runs great, the only real problem we the air conditioner, everything else was normal wear & tear.
My wife and I spent about four months researching info on and driving the same cars you listed. We ended up with the Honda Accord v6 and couldn't be happier. Best car we have ever owned. You will not be disappointed.
I have a 1998 Honda Accord EX 4dr 4cyl. It now has over 150K miles on it and still runs as well as the day I bought it. I am religious about oil changes every 3K miles, and the only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was the A/C condenser sprung a leak at 140K miles. I have an Accord, my mother in law has one, my sister in law has one and my parents have one. We will always have a Honda in the garage.

Get an '04 Maxima SE 3.5L with a six speed. Great car with a good blend of fuel economy, performance, looks, and practicallity. If only it wasn't wrong wheel drive....
I know they are good cars, but Camrys and Accords bore the fuck out of me. |
Don't overlook the Altima.
Solid drive train. Appealing car. Roomy. Much less $ than Maxima. |
Nissan is coming out with an Altima SS-ER coupeeither for 05 or 06, I dont remember. 250HP 3.5L, 4 doors = fun with practicality. S.O. |
My choice. My father owns a V6 Accord('03) and it's fun to drive. Gets around nicely and has great pick-up. Very sweet car. Haven't had any problems with it and the back seat is quite big for the car's size. I haven't had experience with the others. |
If you just want a generic driving appliance, you can't go wrong with the Accord or Camry. If you want to drive something that is more fun than vanilla pudding, check out the V6 Altima, or better yet, the Infiniti G35 Sedan or Coupe.
My mother bought a Honda Accord in '89 (new). My brother now drives it, comming close to 300k now. Mom bought a new Honda Accord 2 years ago.
Nissan is the only Japanese car maker that builds a reliable V-6 .
I could list all the troubles I see with the others , but someone would argue that they have an Xxxxx with a billion and sixteen miles on it and only pop the hood to refill the windshield washer fluid .. So I'll offer what I have and leave it at that |
There are two Nissans in my garage, but we will not buy another. Too many recalls and horrible customer service after tha sale.
Of the cars you listed, I would pick the Honda Accord V6. |
Are you sure? My Pontiacs were made in Canada. My Chevy's were made in Canada and Mexico. |

Horrible paint. Chips if you even think about driving on a gravel road. at least 2 Recalls since 03 in the 2.5L version. A Nissan mechanic recently started a thread about loose screws falling into the engine internals in the 3.5L NISSAN engines. |
Nissan is not Japanese. They are French owned and build many of their vehicles in the US and Mexico. |

I have a 97 Honda Accord EX. Bought it with 17,000 miles on it for $17,000.00 in late '97. Now it has 250,000 miles on it. I just put a used tramsmission for $1,000 . I've changed the oil every 6000 miles and put gas in it, That's it. My daughter gets it soon for her commute to school and back.
I'm looking at several of the cars mentioned here but I don't see how I can justify anything other than a late model Accord coming off lease. Truely one of the best deals I've ever made in a car or anything else. I used to drive Tarus company cars and liked them ok but I don't see how they could out last an Accord |
My wife drives a Honda, I drive a Mercedes-Benz… the Mercedes breaks down (lots), but the Honda has not needed a penny worth of work (other than routine servicing) in 4 years…
Buy the Honda… they are as well made as the newer Mercedes C Class and way more reliable. ANdy |
My only suggestion- Gas prices are ONLY going to get worse and worse in the long term. I got a Toyota Corolla to replace my Camry, and get 39 mpg highway. Smaller cars can still be comfortable inside, and having something that can go many more miles when gas stations are have NO GAS signs, isn't such a bad idea.
I have had three Nissans, 2 of them were 280Z's that both ran over 200k miles before being retired and now the Maxima which is getting close to 100k but I also have to have reliability with my job (I don't get an issued car anymore, the state pays me mileage, 37.5 cents per mile so it adds up quickly) I had REALLY been looking forward to going from the 3.0 liter to the new 265HP 3.5 liter, but the issue with the plenum screws scares the hell out of me! I have also heard wonderfull things about Honda's for a long time and it looks like the V6 could be in the same league with the Nissan. Top of the line Honda's seem to be a little cheaper (less expensive) than the top of the line Nissan's too. Decisions, Decisions... |
Also, my insurance agent says that the insurance on the Maxima is about as bad as on a Mustang GT. Apparently it is lower on the Accord, go figure...

Did that grill come as stock? or was it an add-on? Looks Great! |
It's an after market grill. It's called a billet grill. I like it too. Thanks. |

Not even a thought given to buying American and helping a fellow citizen keep his job?
The Accord is built in Marysville, Ohio. |
In all fairness - that's EXACTLY what you do when you buy something like a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry. While American car manufacturers have been steadily moving production and parts manufacturing to Mexico and overseas, Japanese carmakers have been building NEW auto plants in the U.S. and employing lots of american workers. If you're worried about american auto workers and their jobs, the logical choice would actually be to buy Japanese - or some German cars. |

My wife drives a Chrysler LHS, if we hadn't had our third child we would probably be replacing it with the 300C, but we do have the third child now so it will be a minivan. The LHS has awful resale value, but has given us zero problems, has over a 100K miles, and still drives like brand new. The LHS we have has the 215 HP 3.5, which has proven itself to be a very strong engine, the 300C comes with a V8 is I am not mistaken, and if you are worth a shit at buying cars can be had for well under thirty.
Edited to add: I also had a Volvo 240, We traded it at 250K, and it had never had the head off or the engine out, and the tranny was still shifting like a champ. I had some minor problems with it like a fuel pump at 225K, and a dome light that kind of fell apart, but that is it, and it was running strong when we traded it, if we hadn't needed a larger car we would probably still be driving it. |
