Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov & Eugene Stoner…

The two best designers with the two best rifles……

Got an AR-15… an AK-74 would be nice!

Look at the smiles on their faces… like two proud fathers with their 'sons' that made good.

Although he was not a rifle designer alone, I think I'd have to add John Browning to this list. He created some marvelous weapons, from machine guns to handguns.

All great choices IMHO.  Btw, was it Maxim who "invented" using cartridge gasses to reload a gun?  If it was, I'd put him above all the above.  I know he perfected the first machine gun and assume he discovered the gas loading principle.  However, I've read that Browning invented this principle?

The question was the two best rifle designers in the World?

The answer is: Mauser and Kalashnikov.

If the question is who was the best firearms designer who ever lived.

The answer is: John Browning without a question.

If the question is who is the most important firearms designer who ever lived.

The answer is: Hiram Maxim.

John Moses Browning was much like Moses... Moses gave us the 10 Commandments. Browning gave us the Hi-Power, BAR, and 1911.

I like the guy who designed the G-11, because it seemed like such a leap forward at the time, even if it ended up failing

John Browning.   Remember that both Kalashnikov and Stoner benefitted from his earlier designs.

Too true...!

Browning is in a universe of his own as the worlds most preeminent designer of firearms.

Eugene Stoner

For modern rifles as we know them:

1. Mauser. He developed reliable repeating rifle with a double stacked magazine and rimless, bottleneck cartridges with spitzer bullets.

2. Garand. He developed the first reliable, fixed barrel gas operated semi auto rifle.

Everthing everyone else did (including Stoner & Kalashnikov) is built on the work of these 2.

Browning was the best overall firearms designer...

Stoner produced the best RIFLE design of THIS century, with MK taking 2nd place...

This said because while Browning produced excellent pistols, shotguns and machineguns, he really didn't get a rifle design adobted for mass service. The BAR was deployed as a LMG/SAW, remember... Like Mauser/HK, Browning had a penchant for blowback operation....

Mauser, of course, deserves mention for designing the bolt action that became the template for pretty much everything since (Mod 1898)...

I wouldn't put Garand on the list, although the M1 was a unique design for the time, better designs were later produced, without following Garand's work. For example, the only thing the M1 and AR have in common action wise is the existance of a gas port & tube....

Eventually, someone may replace Stoner on my list, but only when a superior semi/full auto rifle action to the AR-15's is produced. This has yet to happen.

It is still a marvel today- with some improvements the G11 would be un-stopable.

JMB:

-tilting barrel design known to just about every semi-auto pistol today
-double stack pistol mag (Hi-Power) ?? (was he the first?)
-M2
-A5
-1911
-model 37
- model 94??
-1911
-Hi Power
-BAR
-1919
-1911 (did I get that already?)

BTW, the mag safety on the Hi-Power was not his work.  It was added after he died.  Whew!!
