MOSCOW — A woman strapped with explosives blew herself up outside a busy Moscow (search) subway station Tuesday night, killing at least 10 people and wounding more than 50 in the second terrorist attack to hit Russia in a week, officials said.

Seven days earlier, almost to the hour, two Russian jetliners crashed within minutes of each other in what officials determined were terrorist bombings. All 90 people aboard were killed, and the investigation has focused on two Chechen women believed to have been passengers.

A militant Muslim web site published a statement late Tuesday claiming responsibility for the subway bombing on behalf of the "Islambouli Brigades," a group that also claimed it caused the jetliner crashes with terrorist teams in retribution for Russia's war with Islamic rebels in Chechnya (search). The veracity of the claims could be confirmed.

The statement said Tuesday's bombing was a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin (search) "who slaughtered Muslims time and again." Putin has firmly refused to negotiate with the rebels in predominantly Muslim Chechnya, saying they must be wiped out.

Several female homicide bombers allegedly connected with the rebels have caused carnage in Moscow and other Russian cities in a series of attacks in recent years.

Mayor Yuri Luzhkov told reporters near the Rizhskaya subway stop in northern Moscow that the bomber was walking toward the station shortly after 8 p.m. but turned around when she saw two police officers.

She "decided to destroy herself in a crowd of people" in a busy area between the subway station and a nearby department store-supermarket complex, Luzhkov said, adding that the bomb was packed with bolts and pieces of metal.

"There was a desire to cause maximum destruction," he said.

A spokesman for the Federal Security Service, Sergei Ignatchenko, told NTV television that the casualty toll had risen to 10 dead and 51 wounded, of whom 49 were hospitalized. Many of the injured were believed to be seriously wounded, and the death toll was expected to rise. It was not immediately clear if the number of dead included the bomber.

In Washington, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the United States "condemns in the strongest terms the recent terrorist attacks in Russia."

"The American people grieve for the victims of these horrible attacks and extend condolences to their families," he said. "No cause ever justifies terrorism."

At the scene, a white car was set afire, and shattered windows and bloodied people lay on the asphalt in front of the subway station.

A woman, apparently distraught with panic, pushed away a man who repeatedly reached out to help her. A man lying on his stomach moved his arm weakly as people crowded around him.

"There was a powerful blast and then a smaller one. I thought my roof would come off," said 30-year-old Sergei Pyslaru, who was driving on a nearby street.

Alexei Borodin, 29, said he was walking with his mother when he heard "a very powerful bang."

"Something flew past my head -- I don't know what it was. There were people lying in the square," he said. "There were pieces of bodies. We were walking through pieces of people."

Chechen secessionists have been blamed for a series of attacks in Moscow and other parts of Russia the past several years, killing nearly 370 people with bombs in just the past 21 months. In the most recent bombings, 41 people died in a rush-hour explosion on the Moscow subway in February, and a female homicide bomber blew herself up outside a hotel adjacent to Red Square and killed five other people in December.

Many of the Chechen female homicide bombers are believed to be so-called "black widows," who have lost husbands or male relatives in the fighting that has gripped the southern region Chechnya over most of the past decade.

Chechens on Sunday elected a new Kremlin-backed president in the republic, a move Moscow hopes will bring some stability to the region.

Alu Alkhanov, Chechnya's top police official, won with 74 percent of the vote, election officials said, after a campaign in which the six other candidates rarely were shown on television and a leading opponent was kept off the ballot by pro-Moscow local officials.

Alkhanov will replace Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated May 9 when a bomb ripped through a stadium in the Chechen capital, Grozny, during a Victory Day ceremony. A Chechen warlord claimed responsibility for the attac, which killed as many as 23 other people

Hopefully Putin will do his part to show the punks that terrorism will not be tolerated and if they wish to live they should go to some country like france or iran.....you know, some place that terrorists are respected.

Gun battle with police rages in North Ossetia, near ChechnyaThe Associated Press
Updated: 2:53 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2004MOSCOW - Armed men seized a school in the Russian region of North Ossetia Wednesday morning and were in a gun battle with police, news reports said. The region borders with warring Chechnya.

advertisement

The seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, when it was likely that a large number of parents had accompanied their children to class.

The reports said the school was in the city of Beslan, which is about 10 miles north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia.

Vladimir Yakovlev, President Vladimir Putin’s envoy for the southern region of Russia that includes North Ossetia, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was unclear how many children, teachers and parents may be held in the school.

There were no immediate reports of whether the assailants were making demands or indications of who they were. Police could not immediately be reached for comment.

In 1995, Chechen rebels led by warlord Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in the southern Russian city of Budyonnovsk, taking some 2,000 people hostage. The six-day standoff ended with a fierce Russian police assault. Some 100 people died in the incident.

I don't know how long Russia will stand for this.

Messing with a market or a subway is one thing... messing with children is entirely different in the manner in which citizens will react.

Maybe the UN can help or perhaps France or John Kerry.  THAT'S IT!  John Kerry can win this for the Russians by bringing everyone under the same tent!

Say what you want about the Russians, when it comes to their children, they are very protective.   Holding kids hostage will go a long way towards galvanizing the public there against any part of the terrorists' agenda.  The Russians are not handcuffed by a liberal left (like the West) and won't put up with this.

Yup. Unfortunately, those kids are more than likely going to be killed. Russians sent in the alpha team with gas in the theatre last time, so that tactic is out the window.  It sounds like the terrorist have complete control of the building, and are likely learning from their mistakes in Moscow, so any takeover will be very costly.  Chechnyan terrorists will not give in, and the Russian government will not give in either. I pray for them all, but their fate is unfortunately already sealed......

It's "reap what you sow"

Now, would you like to explain why you believe Bush is a socialist? And why leaders WE ELECT suddenly become governing pigs? (I will grant you that once in office, many politicians of all stripes do like to stay in)

Lastly, how is threatening to kill children (who had no say in any elections or part in any historic conflict) justified?

Seriously, I'd be interested to hear your rationale.

Where did this story come from?  I am assuming its not the mainstream press, as they tipped the truth by outing the Chechens as Islamic terrorists.

Next thing you know, we might see some reporting on what is actually happening to non-muslims at the hands of the "religion of peace" in Bosnia (one of Clinton's numerous escapades of "peace-keeping" capitulation), Sudan, FRANCE, etc.

At least the Russians know how to deal with their terrorists.  The female terrorists wrapped in explosives (who were gassed in the theatre because they didn't get the gas masks worn by the male terrorists) - one bullet each to the head.  No trials, no lawyers, no investigation of the circumstances. No attempting to disarm the explosives on a living but unconscious terrorist.  The only reason to leave a live terrorist is for interrogation or other intelligence gathering opportunities.

17 captors, 8 dead (conflicting reports on # of deaths, threatening to blow the place up, 400 hostages, half children

Up to 17 armed attackers, some strapped with explosives, are threatening to blow up a school in southern Russia after taking as many as 400 children and adults hostage.

The RIA news agency said the male and female attackers had herded their captives into the school's gymnasium and mined it. They threatened to blow up the building if Interior Ministry forces tried to take it by force.

At least three civilians were killed when the attackers, believed to be Chechen rebels, stormed the school.

But nearly 50 children escaped by hiding during the raid and then leaving in small groups after the shooting died down. Two girls ran away after the captives were forced into the school.

The school is in the city of Beslan, about 15 kilometres north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, a republic that borders warring Chechnya.

The Itar-Tass news agency said the attackers were demanding the release of Chechen fighters seized in neighbouring Ingushetia in June during a huge rebel raid.

from Bloomberg:

Russia School Seized by Terrorists, 300 Hostages Held (Update6)
Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- About 20 armed men and women wearing explosive belts seized a school in southern Russia and are holding at least 300 hostages, including children, the country's fourth terrorist attack in the past eight days. As many as 10 people died.

Three people were killed when the school was taken, and between 300 and 400 hostages are being held, said Alexander Osiptsov, a spokesman at North Ossetia's presidential administration. Seven people died in hospital, Itar-Tass news service said, citing the local hospital that treated them.

Terrorist attacks killed at least 99 people in Russia in the past week. A suicide bomber yesterday detonated an explosive near a subway station in Moscow, killing 10. Two passenger jets crashed Aug. 24 within minutes of each other in Russia after explosions, killing 89. President Vladimir Putin said those attacks were the work of terrorists linked to al-Qaeda. He hasn't commented on today's standoff in Beslan.

``Now there's a big question mark over the stability brought in by Putin,'' said Al Breach, a strategist at Brunswick UBS in Moscow. ``There's no feeling of stability, there's gloom.''

Putin broke his holiday and flew back to Moscow from the Black Sea resort of Sochi, according to the Kremlin's Web site.

NTV television said a blast was heard inside the school, without giving further details. Rossiya television showed troops surrounding the school and a girl running from the area. Shooting was audible on the broadcast.

``The terrorists aren't willing to negotiate so far,'' Osiptsov said. ``This is why it's absolutely unclear where exactly in the school the explosion took place'' and whether more people were killed.

Terrorist Threats

The terrorists threatened to detonate their explosive belts if rescuers attempt to storm the building and said 50 children would be executed if any of the hostage-takers is killed, Itar-Tass said, citing Kazbek Dzantiyev, the head of Northern Ossetia's Interior Ministry.

The fighters are demanding authorities release people arrested as suspects after Chechen rebels raided the neighboring republic of Ingushetia in June.

About 50 children escaped from the school at the time it was seized, Itar-Tass said, without citing anyone. Another 15 children were released by terrorists, it said.

First Day of School

The gunmen seized the school during a ceremony to begin the Russian school year. Festivities are usually held in schools across Russia on Sept. 1, with children coming to school in their finest clothes and carrying flowers for the teachers, parents coming to meet staff and songs being played over the public address system.

The U.K. government contacted Putin to offer its support to Russia, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said in a statement e-mailed to news services.

``I want to express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims of yesterday's terrible bomb attack in Moscow,'' Straw said to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. ``And I was shocked to hear the news this morning of the siege in Beslan.''

The terrorists released a woman who passed their demand to meet with Ossetian and Ingushetian presidents, said a spokesman at the headquarters set up by the Ossetian government to manage the crisis. He declined to be identified.

Russia suffered its worst terrorist attack in October 2002, when at least 129 hostages died as Russian special forces stormed a theater in Moscow where more than 800 people were being held hostage by Chechen separatists. Those terrorists also wore explosive belts.

North Ossetia borders Chechnya, where Russian troops have been fighting Islamic rebels since 1994. The headquarters of Russian troops in Northern Caucasus is located in the Ossetian town of Mozdok.

Bombing Claims

A group calling itself the Islambouli Brigades claimed responsibility for the aircraft explosions and yesterday's bombing in a statement posted on an Islamic Web site.

``Targeting Russia is the start of a violent and bloody war against those who have dedicated themselves to kill Islam and its people,'' the group said. ``This war will dissuade the criminals in Russia's house from killing Muslims.''

Moscow police searched the Kursk subway station and Chechnya's representative office after it received telephone bomb alerts. No bombs were discovered.

``This is a war on Russia, waged in a specific form where you can't spot the enemy immediately,'' Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on the Rossiya television before the hostage-taking raid in Beslan. ``But that's a war.''

Chechnya

Russia has about 80,000 soldiers in Chechnya. Chechnya on Sunday elected Alu Alkhanov president in a poll organized by the republic's pro-Russian government and held to replace Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated in May. Rebels called the elections illegitimate.

Putin backed first Kadyrov and then Alkhanov, saying they were best equipped to return Chechnya to a normal life after a decade of conflict. Former President Boris Yeltsin sent troops into Chechnya in December 1994 in an attempt to crush Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dudayev's bid to secede from Russia.

The republic's separatist movement fell under the influence of Muslim fundamentalists amid Russian brutality against civilians during the first, two-year war and as Arab mercenaries started to take part in the conflict.

At least 39 people died in February this year when a terrorist bomb blast hit the second carriage of a train on the Moscow Metro underground railway. Putin said at the time that the Metro attack may have been an attempt to put pressure on him during Russian presidential elections scheduled for March 14. Putin won re- election with 71 percent of ballots cast in those polls.

Both Russians and Chechens have been criticized by groups such as Amnesty International for breaching human rights in the war.

Amen.  I always thought the one mistake GWB made in the war on terror was letting the State Depertment continue to rub the Russians nose in shit over "Chechen seperatists".  Seperatists my ass, they're terrorists pure and simple.
We should ally with the Russians.  Offer our air support in Chechnya in exchange for Russian boots on the ground in Iraq and A-stan.  If WW2 taught people anything it's that the combination of American technology and Slavic ruthlessness is a real winner.  If the Germans couldn't beat us at their peak, these Jihadist animals don't stand a chance.
