No Moore for the Corps?

Theaters on Army and Air Force bases will not show Michael Moore’s controversial movie “Fahrenheit 9/11,” but the issue is up in the air for Navy and Marine Corps bases.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which runs the theaters on those services’ bases, made the decision for business reasons, not because of the film’s content, said spokesman Judd Anstey. “AAFES made a business decision not to contract ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ due to its late 35-millimeter availability and early DVD release.”

The film is being rushed out on DVD and home video only weeks after its theatrical run to capitalize on the presidential election campaign.

A decision about screening the film in Navy and Marine Corps theaters is pending, said Ingrid Mueller, spokeswoman for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division of Navy Personnel Command. She could not provide further information about when a decision would be made or the issues being considered.

The film’s Web site describes it as a “searing examination of the Bush administration’s actions in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11.” Released in civilian theaters June 25, it has grossed more than $100 million.
