What gun would be good to get if i were going to get a 7.62x54? Anybody like Finn model 39's?
I know its not an AR but i've already got 2 [sniper]

Get a Russian M-91....great rifle and it is only around 50 dollars!

The Finn is a great rifle. All that I have seen have the best fit and finish of any military rifle I have seen. Also very good accuracy. You will not be dissapointed.

There are some nice rifles available in 7.62x54R.

The Sellier and Bellot boxer ammo is not very good. It's loaded hot and the primer pockets are shallow and difficult to reprime.

What kind of accuracy could I expect from an average Finn 39?

Do I like that caliber? What do you think! By the way, the best surplus ammo is the mid '80s Soviet copper washed stuff in the spam cans. Don't be fooled by the ammo being offered as "7.62*54R, Russian, brass cased, non corrosive". It is Albanian, and reviews are mixed. All military surplus 7.62*54R is corrosive. Don't believe otherwise.

Does 7.65 x 54 count? My wife's 1891 Agentine Mauser carbine (in cherry condition) is a helluvalot of fun to shoot... and has started some interesting conversations at the range. The problem is finding ammo...

I love my Mosin Nagant rifles, the M-39, the MN91s, the MN44s...all great rifles and a great round.

I had heard power wise, it was in between .308 and 30.06. Can anyone confirm?
Also how is the kick in those old Russian bolt rifles?

I haven't had the opportunity to put any rounds through my Russian M44, but I hear the recoil is pretty stiff.

7.62x54mm is the same as .30-06. The metric equivalent of .30-06 is 7.62x54. The difference is that 7.62x54R has a rim like a .38 special and 7.62x54 does not(.30-06). As far as all surplus being corrosive, that may be true. If you clean your gun after each shooting like I do, then who cares?? Athorough cleaning doesn't give the corrosive agents time to harm your gun. If you're lazy and don't clean your guns, then stay away from corrosive ammo of any kind and caliber in any gun. Also, a lot of people fail to realize that corrosive ammo ACTUALLY has a longer shelf life than non-corrosive ammo. That's something to think about for all you conspiracy theory nuts stockpiling for WWIII. Another point is that Wolf's new production 7.62x54R ammo is in fact non-corrosive as it is new production and not surplus ammo.

Power may be close but the 30-06 is a 7.62x63mm, however the base of the 7.62x54R is fatter so powder capacity (sp?) may be close.

As Brad mentioned, the kick is stiff on an M44. Either that or my shoulder wimped out over the winter. I keep an old Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad around for it. I'd tear it apart and put it in a normal stock and slap a scope on it, but all the SN's match and it's in wonderful condition. The best is seeing others reactions when you shoot it. Some of my friends were terrified of it. When I finally got them to fire it they were grinning so wide you'd swear the tops of their heads were going to fall off.

I'm planing on getting a mosin nagant this month but i'm not sure which one i want.
I like the Finn m39 and the m44, hey maybe i'll get both.
how good do your m44's shoot, are they fairly accurate? are the finn 39's pretty heavy? i thought they were like 9-10 pounds. what about the m91/59?
just thinking out loud.......

In power the 308,30-06 and7.62x54R overlap.Depending on the load.I would say the kick in a 44 carbine was comparable to the 03 Springfield.The Romanian PSL is a real pussycat.
However to get decent groups out of surplus you have to check the runout on the bullets.Also 3 shot groups.The barrel is too light and the groups start to wonder.This is my experience with owning one and shooting two others quite a bit.

I think you maybe mistaken in this case, SF46. 30-06 is 7.62 x 60mm. 30-06 has the longest case among all major military ammos. The only military ammunition with case length close to 30-06 is the 7.92mm Mauser (7.92 x 57mm).
