Now...Mom and Dad are "dyed in the wool" Democrats, who dont even know WHY they are Democrats.
We are originally from a coal mining town in Pennsylvania...and they were raised hating Republicans.
I was raised hearing the same crap...but we moved to Florida in 1984, And I was old enough to start learning something about politics while Bill Clinton was in office....I soon became a Republican

So, I am talking with my Mom...and something about the RNC came on the news.
The following (loosely reproduced) conversation ensued:

ME: Did you see John McCain make Michael Moore look like an ass?

MOM: No, but I like John McCain...HE should have been President, instead of Bush.

ME: What makes you think that?

MOM: I like McCain...and I HATE Bush.

ME: But...what do you know about McCain that makes you think HE should be President?

MOM: He's FAIR, He's HONEST, He's....

ME: Wait a minute...HOW do you know this stuff?...WHAT do you know about McCain?

MOM: I know George Bush was APPOINTED President, by a judge.

ME: Umm...No, Mom, He wasnt...He won the Electoral College, and the Supreme Court stopped the Gore campaign from trying to steal the election.
The Republicans followed the Constitution, the Democrats tried to throw it away.

MOM: NO!...He didnt win Florida.

ME: You REALLY have NO IDEA how it actually works...Do you?

MOM: I know that Bush is just for the RICH.

ME: And, HOW exactly do you know THAT?

MOM: Because Republicans are ALL for the rich people...they ALWAYS have been.

ME: What facts can you back that up with?

MOM: Republicans have ALWAYS been for the rich.

ME: You didnt answer my question...give me some examples.

MOM: They just ARE!...Republicans have ALWAYS been for the rich.

ME: Again...Give me some reasons...You cant POSSIBLY feel THAT strongly about something, without knowing WHY you feel that way.

MOM: Republicans only care about the RICH.

ME: That statement means NOTHING, unless you can show me some evidence....
You know what I think?...I think you were BROUGHT UP thinking that, and you dont even know why.
You are just a parrot, repeating the meaningless blather you have heard over the years, without even knowing what you are talking about.

MOM: Yeah RIGHT!...Just LOOK how rich George Bush, and Cheney are...They only care about the rich.

ME: DO YOU REALIZE HOW FREAKING RICH JOHN KERRY, AND EDWARDS ARE!!?

MOM: We didnt have a deficit like this 4 years ago...We had a surplus.

ME: You dont even know what any of that means...We had a PROJECTED surplus, based on the DotCom bubble, which fell through.
But, you have no clue what the DotCom bubble was anyway...so it doesnt matter.
And, by the way...when was the last time they sent you a bill for the deficit?...Is it due next week?

MOM: Well...there is NO WAY IN HELL, I am voting for Bush.

ME: Oh, I know...But, you STILL cant tell me WHY...You are an un-informed voter...very sad.

How old is she? (if you don't mind) She seems to have issues with compreshension and is a little psychotic. By your account she repeated the same thing around 6 times, with the goal of influencing you, even after you told her you wanted a different answer.

Yep, I'm from a small PA coal mining town too and I know that line of reasoning to a "T".

LOL...no, there is nothing wrong with her...she has just been a brainwashed Democrat, for all of her life.

You wont find many Democrats who can come up with any better answers (the conversation was abridged)

Has nothing to do with age. Thats just the thought process of a liberal. I deal with a few every day at work. Exactly the same pattern

No, that makes her a DEMOCRAT!!!

Bet you won't be getting any invites for Sunday dinner anytime soon!

My maternal grandparents, God rest their souls, were 2 of the best people I've ever known. I wouldn't be where I'm at today without them. But if there is a "silver lining" to their passing it's 2 votes that won't go Democrap! "Democrats are for the working man" I can still here Grandpa saying. If friggin' Stalin ran as a Democrat they would've voted for him. Of course I'm originally from the Youngstown, Ohio, area---the same place that sent that idiot Jim Traficant to Congress for 18 years (that is until the federal penal system intervened).

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I rest my case.

I currently still live with my parents and had a conversation similar to that with my mother about gun issues. I asked her what she thought of the 2nd amendment and whether she thought gun ownership was a privilege and she said yes it's a priviledge not a right. She knows I've been very active in the gun community and she does not like it one iota of a bit. She thinks every person who is in the gun community is an extremist wacko out to kill somebody. She then went on ranting about how the FBI is going to come grab me and throw me in jail for liking guns and what not. She said that i'm on my way to become a militant extremist. My parents are republicans, my dad doesn't care about the gun issue, he's fine with some guns but he still doesn't think people "need"(there's that stupid word again in a country that's suppose to be free) "assault weapons" and anything that looks bad, but at least he's somewhat lenient.

My mother on the otherhand grew up with 6 brothers and sisters all of whom are democrats and she is one of those people "blessed" with an irrational fear of guns. I thought this was quite humorous since she has a CHL here in houston.  I think in her mind I'm still a silly little 12 year old who's very impressionable and is lost in his own little fantasy world. I think she's having a hard time acknowledging that i'm almost 23 years old now and working full time. One of my key issues in politics is the 2nd amendment more than anything else(not that I don't concern myself with other rights, I do.) and I don't think she likes it, she always gives me these wierd looks if I so much as say the word "gun."

oh my parents are for bush, my mother just has a lot of that liberal-ism still in her. She's very much against people owning lots of guns, she doesn't think people should own more than 1(and we have over ten in the house) and she also believes almost everything she sees on the news.

My parents were both Republicans.  My mom didn't like firearms and she wouldn't allow her children to have them in her house.  My dad didn't care one way or the other.  He was an ex-Marine.  He did own a Mossberg .22, but it had been in storage since he was a kid.  I have a brother who is ex-Army Special Forces.  He has a Ruger .22, but doesn't understand why civilians would need anything else.  Especially an AR15.  He's not really opposed, just doesn't understand.  He makes joking comments about my "assault rifles" all the time.  I'm sure he thinks I'm a wanna-be soldier or something.  My other brother is a Democrat.  He doesn't own guns, but he has yet to make an anti-gun statement around me.  In fact, he has made a few somewhat supportive comments about my hobby.  I have 2 sisters, but I really don't know their opinions on guns.

After my mom died, I convinced my dad to get out his Mossberg, clean it up and go shooting with me.  Soon after, he bought a Glock 26.  If you ask my dad why he has guns, he will say, "So I can shoot someone if I need to."    He's a smartass.  I agree completely with him.

You can tell her that if she is correct and the republicans are for the rich, then in order for the republicans to gain power, they must increase their support base. if they are for the rich, then increasing their support base would meen making more people rich.

If the democrats are for the poor, then increasing their support base would meen making more people poor.

So by being a democrat, she is saying that more people should be poor.

Liberals are the mommies and conservatives are the daddies.

The mommy (liberal) says " you can be anything that your sweet little heart desires."
The daddy (conservative) says "It is great that you have dreams, but if you just sit around and dont work for those dreams, you are going to starve."

What does your dad say?

When your mom is not around.

ktm500

This was not meant to be a dig at your dad, just an acknowlegement that you may think that he is a liberal, only because he has long ago given up trying to speak about the subject reasonably with your mom around to hear. He has to live with her , so why make waves?

Old people shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Old liberals should be deported to Europe so they can spend their last years living under Socialism.
Before they croak, they MIGHT realize how stupid they've been.

I had the very same conversation except with my DAD. He thinks GWB is terrible. No reason or facts, thinks he has beady eyes. ? WTF?  Mom on the other hand is dyed in the wool conservative. Loves GWB.

Go figure.

I once attended a lavish dinner celebration for a Republican candidate.  Filet mignon, finest wine and spirits, a top-notch orchestra, excellent cigars available to those who wanted them . . . it must have cost hundreds per person to put this thing on.  Everyone was dressed to the nines in thousand-dollar suits and dresses and beautiful jewelry.

The keynote speaker spoke of the differences between us and the Democrats with perfect concision.  Looking around at the opulent scene, he said "The difference between us and our oppsition is this:  the Democrats believe that nobody should live like this.  We Republicans believe that EVERYONE should live like this."

The crowd roared.  It was one of those moments that made me proud to be a Republican.
