So what is the deal with DSL? I currently have cable, but am moving temporarily while my home is being built (8 mo) and right now I have a throttled down cable connection limited to like 1mps, but I can get a DSL cheaper which will give me 5mps. So do I need to get anything else other than a dongle? Can I still use my same modem? What is all involved in the switch?

You cant use the same modem.  If you can get a faster connection for a lower price then go for it.  Both of them offer an always on connection and fast downloads.
