August 31, 2004 --  A cop was in serious condition with head injuries today after he was knocked off his scooter and stomped by protestors at an illegal march, police said.

Several thousand people took part in the march — conducted without a permit by the group Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign — which started at the United Nations, then moved south on Second Avenue, west on 23rd Street and back uptown on Eighth Avenue.

The violence happened at 30th Street and Eighth Avenue, where police barricades were set up to protect Madison Square Garden.

Police spokesman Paul Browne, who saw what happened, said that after protesters knocked the officer off the scooter, they "kicked and punched" him.

The cop was in serious condition at St. Vincent's Hospital.

True.

On the other hand if they are attacking the police it's actually a riot, and those are illegal!

The problem is once the cops start busting heads the city will get slammed with lawsuits.  And not just from those that received the head busting...our old friends at the ACLU will come down on them too.  In our PC society it's okay to injury a cop but not okay to administer an ass whipping on a criminal.

Yes there is, for saftey(of marchers and non marchers) reasons and to better manage what is going on in the city for the benifit of all the citizens it is required that you obtain a permit to march, they did not do this. They than went and assaulted an officer of the law. Now I'm not one to agree with it(the need for a permit), but at the same time because it is for safety as well, I'm a little more inclined to put up with it. The other thing is that the 1st amendment gives us the right to Peaceably assemble. When you assault somone regardless of if it's a police officer or a bush supporter() you are no longer peaceably assembled and thus are not protected by the 1st amendment.

I heard they got ranch rescue too. Don't know who true that is but I know the SPLC had something to do with Ranch Rescue not doing somethings a couple months back. I doubt the SPLC would do anything to this group as they seem to have a lot of immigrant(for helping illegals at that) groups listed on their site

Well I'm very sorry to see a cop was hurt, but on the bright side, I'd hope the NYPD has unofficially declared open season with no bag limit on protestors.  My congratulations to the protestors; you likely just disturbed a nest of 10,000 blue hornets.  I hope they show you all the same courtesy the cop last night experienced.

Whats almost as disturbing is that there are reports of individual delagates being singled out, followed, and verbally and physically assulted by these assholes.  The protestors apparently know what hotels the delagates are staying in and have them staked out so whenever a delagate leaves the hotel the protestors hook up by cell and text messaging to get groups to harrass the delagates as they go about their business going to restaurants, shows, sightseeing, and going to the convention.

FWIW, I think the real hippie whomping is going to start today.  I just can't imagine an NYPD officer going down without a little street justice being meaded out in retaliation.

This is why Libertarians have beciome the party for Potheads instead of the party for thinking Americans.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

NOWHERE does this not allow for local municipalities to require permits to block public roads and iinterfere with the rest of the public's daily life.

Anybody can meet with as many people as they want in the privacy of their own homes or businesses.  If you want to use a state park or city street - you need to get permission from that appropriate government entity.

Heck, they let almost anyone get permission - and constitutionally speaking they really don't have to.

These fuckers just occupied the streets by force - they interfered with the lawful traffic flow and, by their direction of travel, appeared to threaten the convention.
