They hunt.
Shotgun for deer here in Ohio. I've seen some small game hunting and varmint hunting as well. The pisser is some of them do not follow the law when it comes to wearing hunter orange. It is against the 'Amish rules' to wear anything bright. Some do wear the orange, some do not. |

I've seen Amish buying and selling AK-47s at gunshows. They don't however use electronic optics.

The Amish around here hunt a lot, and they use modern firearms. They have a reputation for ignoring the game laws.
When discussing the Amish, it is always important to note that diferent groups within this order have VERY different rules. The local bishops set the rules. |

Yes, they hunt.
Yes, they have modern firearms. Yes, they are NRA members, most of them sign up to be life. I know this for a fact because my friend's Mom delivered mail to them. They usually perfer muzzleloaders, .22 and 12ga. shotguns, but there are some that are more "radical" than that. I know one guy who is their local FFL/gunsmith. He is a real pain to bid against when it comes to auctions. I sometimes wonder how they would go if the bacon was in the fire. |

My Amish neighbors all hunt. Some have some very nice weapons. A lot of them also archery hunt and again have some very nice bows and climbing tree stands. Funny to see them up there in their traditional blue clothing and black hat instead of camo though.
As mentioned, the local bishop sets the rules for that particular local / sect. |

Yep. I grew up in an area with a large Amish community and used to see them in the gun shops. They were paticularly fond of single shots NEA's and SKS's. I think they used them because they were cheap. |

I thought it was the Quakers that were pacifists, not the Amish. We have a similar group around here in Tennessee called The Minonites, good bunch of people, unlike the Amish they can use modern equiptment like tractors and cars but they keep them very plain. The women ware small bonnets and the men all ware suppenders and if they're married they grow a beard. It wouldn't bother me a bit to become a Minonite, I think it's a good life style, very simple and godly. We'd have less problem in the world if more people were like the Amish and Minonites.

I use to make sales calls on the Amish. Their favorite rifle is the old thirty thirty. I gave them away as sales /contest/prizes and they all loved them. I saw many nice deer they had killed and all were shot many times. They can the meat with some type of gravey great stuff .

No freekin Duh. I only live in the middle of the third largest Amish community in the US. They are my next door neighbors, and I do talk to them quite freqently. They sure are better neighbors than the drug dealers across the street. I was just speculating. They may not do the self defense thing, but I don't think they would roll over and be a sheeple. It is easy to pay lip service to the Bishop, but I do wonder. |

This may be a matter of semantics, but the groups mentioned so far in this thread, at least their conservative versions, are non-resistant, not pacifists. Most pacifists I have met are into a lot of protest against the government (JUST like the democraps). Non-resistant people, on the other hand, are willing to take their lumps in life and trust God for their provision. They don't expect help from the government when something happens. NMSight |

lemme tell you a little something about the amish.... growing up my families farm was half in MD, half in PA, on the outskirts of amish country. they have MONEY!. they have tons of money.
theyre hipocrites. they will embrace technology if it is convenient for them. let me give you a "for instance" there is a place in quarryville PA that sells sheds, small barns etc. they are built in a large warehouse facility then delivered to you on a roll-back truck. well the amish are amazing carpenters and they are the work force at this place. they use power tools and air tools, electric lights, and swamp coolers powered by large industrial diesel generators. apparently god doesnt mind as long as its off-grid. they have telephones but they build an outhouse type shed for the phone so its not technically in their house. there are amish van services that take them shopping or take them to work. its ok to ride in the car, they just wont own one. dont romanticize the amish lifestyle. its a frickin scam. tax free, exempt from the draft, cranking out Nazi-method meth by the metric shit-ton and screwing up our roads with their dumbass buggies. dont get me started!!! |

I used to shoot alot of trap in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The Amish very frequently had Perrazi trap guns. They didn't like it very well when some little snot-nosed punk with an 870 beat them and their $4000 gun.

I sell boats here in Northern Indiana, and it is okay for them to have a boat with electric start, but it must be a tiller, no steering wheels allowed. |

i see amish kids buying and selling all manor of assault rifles at the gun shows.
at the local auctions, they always bid on the firearms. quakers, shakers, amish, mennonites, hutterites, zoarites, etc. are all generally classified as pacifists...call them what you will. as a group, they are very good people and i'm proud to call some of them my neighbors and friends. a mennonite built my barn and the amish built my house. |

There is nothing in the Amish tenets that requires them to be stuck in the 19th century. There is no expectation for them to disadvantage themselves that way. Most public perception of the Amish is founded in a frickin' movie rather than reality. The disconnect between our hollywoodized impression of who the Amish are and the reality is what causes severe reactions in people.
My parents had a set of kitchen cabinets made by an Amish cabinetmaking company. Their kitchen contractor said that they were easily the best cabinets he had ever seen and SHOULD have cost twice what they did. That kitchen has become one of his show pieces and those cabinets are his number one recommendation now. What makes Amish craftsmanship so good? Its not the tools they use; they use many of the same tools as their competitors, the difference is that they either use deisel generators to power them or power them hydraulically off the grid, it is their commitment to doing everything they do as well as they can do it. What makes their product more affordable? It's because they do not expect the same levels of profits that the rest of us do. Yes, since they don't pay the same taxes we do, they don't NEED the same margins. This is the benefit of lower taxes. Lower taxes mean that it is possible for companies to operate under lower margins and possibly to pass those savings on to their customers. Pretty cool huh? Too bad a lot of companies don't pass those savings on. No the Amish aren't the idyllic utopians they are portrayed as, but neither are they the hooligans and hypocrites some portray them as. Some Amish perhaps do fit DevilDog's assessment, but most do not. |

There's a nice little Amish gun shop out in Sugarcreek, Oh They have a pretty good slection of stuff and their prices aren't bad, last time I was there he had a LNIB 20" Bushmaster for around $700 that came in on a trade, Years ago (late 70's) there was another shop out in Charm, Oh Guy out there was a pretty good 'smith, made custom stocks,and had great prices. I bought a few guns from him, He went out of business after he got robbed. From what I was told, some yahoos pulled up after he was closed one night and broke into his shop, and when he went out to see what was going on they took a couple of shots at him and told him to get in the house, meanwhile they stole all of his handguns, most of his rifles... now he makes cabinets....

I'm not so sure about that margin of profit.
Sometimes that depends on weather or not you are wearing a black hat and a beard. They really enjoy taking "the English" money. There is a definite boundary when it comes to the Amish and the English. Tell you what: If living without electricity and rubber air filled tires and telephones hooked to poles get them acceptance into heaven, more power to them. Things in their world are really no different than they are for any of us English. Abortions, Drugs, Alcoholism are very common in the Amish community. They have the same problems we do. I just think they really take the long road sometimes to get to their objectives. Nothing wrong with that, just their way. Our one Amish neighbor would come up to borrow our tractors, sweepers, welders, and we even took pictures of their kids for them so they would have some kind of a record of their kids when they were young. Why? Because they didn't own it and wouldn't get in trouble with the Bishops. It was ok to borrow, just not own. The commercialism around where I live gets really old, the exploitation of everything they do. I get tired of them talking Dutch and them thinking that I'm too stupid to understand them (those three years of German in high school come in handy sometimes, even though I got Cs). |

Yes, and Islam is the religion of peace. Amish own guns, hunt, drink too much, steal things, fuck around on their wives, cuss, fight, gamble and do all manner of things that humans do. Like most religious groups, some are more devout than others. |

AS a Deputy back when Waco TX. happened , the local Amish leader came and asked if they would be next, because they all owned firearms and would die for thier beliefs. I advised him that they where to big of a group and the ATF most likely would not bother them. But it goes to show they are thinking about it. I think the agents that raid an Amish community might be surprised.

In Kentucky there was a large population of Amish. They did not have driver's licenses or anything with photos on it. While working at the sporting goods counter at wally world I was always having to deny them, because they never had anything type of photo ID.
They all had firearms though. They just had to buy them used from flea markets or private purchases out of the newspaper. |
