Eighty-eight year old Mabel Wong was still in critical condition in John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek on Monday. She's been there since a week ago last Saturday, battling for her life, after a horrible mauling by a neighbor's pit bull near her Concord home.

In the aftermath, people wondered how it could happen. What did this little elderly lady do to trigger such an attack? The answer is simple and blunt. Nothing.

According to a study by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, covering the years between 1979 and 1994, pit bulls were involved in 57 fatal attacks -- well over twice the number for the next breed on the list, rottweilers, with 19, and more than German shepherds (17), huskies (12) and malamutes (12) combined. A 2000 study by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association concluded that pit bulls "were involved in 65 fatal attacks between 1979 and 1998 ... twice that of rottweilers and more than three times German shepherds.''

Even more damning are the statistics kept by Clifton, a dog activist who has been keeping meticulous records since 1982 of dog attacks severe enough to have been reported in the media. It should be noted that Clifton excludes attacks by guard dogs, police dogs and trained fighting dogs and does not chart cases where the breed is uncertain.

The numbers are stunning. As of last week, meaning Mabel Wong's mauling would be included, pit bulls were cited in 831 attacks. The next closest was the rottweiler with 373. No other breed made it out of double digits.

Many dog lovers here refuse to admit the truth that these are vicious, unstable animals. I am second to NO ONE in my love of dogs, but pit bulls, sadly, need to be euthanized-for society's sake.

I feel sick saying this, but it really is how I feel. They hurt old people and children. Too many owners are unconcerned assholes and the only way to combat it successfully, is to eliminate these trained killers.

And this guy isn't even an American, yet he feels the need to chime in about OUR country:

having seen the evidence from abroad and attacks at home, it was made illegal to own pitbulls.....

Yes they did, however they didn't ban staffordshire terriers, which are pretty much IDENTICAL to pit bulls, reguardless of what anybody says.

Is anyone else tired of the so-called "voices of reason" around here?

I'd like to think that the majority of people here realize the Bush administration is comprised of criminals, many of whom harbor a rather disturbing disregard for human life. Again, this is an assertion held by legions.

So why is it whenever a story surfaces that could be perceived as beneficial to BushCo (9/11; anthrax; Wellstone's murder; beheading), we're assailed by the "voices of reason"? Their suggestions are familiar by now:

"Don't jump to conclusions."
"That tin-foil hat is strapped pretty tight."
"Now is not the time."
"I'm ashamed to be of the DU today."

Or, my favorite:

"You're making us look terrible."

Despite the fact that administrations of a far lesser degree of maliciousness have employed murder and deception as a means to an end, and despite the fact that this regime has an eerie resemblance to those fun-loving denizens of the Third Reich, we're supposed to devolve into a state of naivete.

If I want to question my government, or construct a theory (no matter how inane), even at the VERY MOMENT I am relayed of tragedy, I don't feel it necessary to be told to honor decorum or be tepid in response.

In other words: if there was a terrorist attack tomorrow, no one here should be inhibited to post a theory of how the government might have fomented it. After all, haven't the last three and a half years convinced us that Bush is capable of anything?

I don't think there is a single blog out there I read that hasn't at least once linked to Democratic Underground's Forum. The place is like a train wreck of human thought; you just can't help but gawk at their twisted logic and wild-eyed conspiracy theories. This parody basically sums up the 16 stock responses you will ever read on DU. It's the same shit, over and over and over and over. You will eventually tire of it, everything they say is utterly predictable in its paranoia, hatefulness, and boundless stupidity. I hardly go to DU any more, it's just too predictable and I'm never shocked or surprised by anything they say anymore. It was hilarious and fascinating at first, but now it's like "Eh, what do you expect? It's DU."
