I am talking about weapons that don't so much 'fill a niche' as are simply terrific examples of everything firearms represent. Weapons with great history, great craftsmanship, terrific accuracy. Perhaps they advanced the science of shooting dramatically. Perhaps they won a war, or won the West. What do you think should be in ANY collection?

I am a milsurp collector, so I will answer from that point of view.

Good examples of these can be had very inexpensively.

Lee-Enfield: either a No.1 Mk 3 or a No. 4 Mk 1 -- arguably the finest military bolt action of all times. $150 or less.

Mosin-Nagant: either a Finn M-39 for great looks and great accuracy or a Russian 91/30 -- extremely tough and sub-zero weather proof. $150 and $75 respectively.

Mauser: Yugo, Turk, Czech -- these can be had for very little money and in great shooting condition. $100 -150.

SKS -- I prefer the Russian, but outstanding Chinese examples are inexpensive. $150.

AK-type -- plenty of good $300 examples out there

.22 -- find a good heavy barrel target version to go along with the 10/22. Mossbergs $175.

air rifle -- No kidding. Fine a good quality example like a GAMO. Expect to pay for it as much as you would pay for a good .22. Sometimes, an air rifle is the best choice. $150.

K-31 -- You can buy a Rolex or you can buy a truckload of these and a good Seiko for much less money. These have the finest trigger out there. They are renowned for their accuracy. Easy to find for less than $100.

1911 in 45acp.
Battle rifle of the US.... M1,M14,1903, you get the drift.
AR-15 or quality copy of same....
38 or 357 wheel gun.

In my way of thinking, for me to be a self respecting American, I can only be with out one of these at any given time..........right now I am between main battle rifles....but an AR-10 may have to fill that role.

thats not to say that all of you with high points arent American.....It is just the rule of my household.

2) Any Hesse or Vulcan Arms AK.

If you don't have either of these, please don't call yourself a "gun collector"

Well , I would say all of the above and a black powder wheel gun aka: Good,Bad and the Ugly or various spahgetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood type wheel guns. And a 45-70,90,110,120 sharps aka:Quigley Down Under. Then there would be the civil war era muskets. That is just my take. Coondog

I don't see owning guns as a collection. To me they are tools to use towards an end, not the end in and of themselves.

With that said, I think that evey gun owner should be involved in some sort of shooting competition, and to not do so is borderline irresponsible unless replaced with extensive training (and shooting a pie plate while standing still is not training).

I compete in IDPA and my club also does rifle, shotgun, and 3-gun matches. As such I need a game gun of each type. For me it's a Kimber, a DSA (for now) and an 870.

I also have a carry permit, so I need guns of various levels of concealability. For me that's a NAA .22mag, a Keltec P32, a Glock 26, and a Glock 19.

I also like to take newbies out, and for that I like to use .22s. I have two 10/22s (one scoped one irons) and a Ruger MKII.
