Thomas Jefferson once said that in order for freedom to prevail a nation must have a revolution every 20 or 30 years. This revolution need not be violent but it must happen or tyranny will sneak up upon us.

I have been wondering if the United States is now revolution proof. It seems that the politicians are too stuck in their ways to change anything and we are headed to socialism no matter what and on top of that there are very few patriots in this country who actually want change so are we now revolution proof?

We have a revolution every 4-8 years.  Its called the Presidential Elections.  Going from Carter to Reagan to Clinton to GW definitely counts as drastic shifts in the direction of the country.

No, we are not. In fact, the Civil War was a revolution. Also, the Whiskey rebellion, and thats just the white peoples rebellions.

Yes. If the American republic could survive the Civil War, little more could destroy it.

Even in the late 60's, intelligent progressives (Like one Hillary Rodham) understood outright popular revolution was impossible in the US.  Too hard to overthrow a system that works for so many.  Better to infiltrate and corrupt the elite and change it from the top instead of the bottom.

The US is, in essence, revolution proof from a 'violent uprising' standard...

The Whiskey Rebellion

Nat Turner

John Brown

The Civil War

In ALL cases, the REBELS FAILED

HOWEVER we can accomplish a 'revolution' of sorts thru the political process, IF the scale tips far enough left or right...

For example, *IF* Bush wins and we get 5-6 additional GOP senators, you will see a 'revolution' start as GW packs the courts with conservative judges.

Or *IF* Kerry wins and the GOP looses congress, the same will happen in the other direction...

BUT if *any* group starts a 'popular revolt', the military/national guard/police will grind them into the ground...

And that's the way it's got to be, unless you like living in a 'Bananna Republic'

The US (or any country, for that matter) cannot maintain it's international position & economic stability if it's govt is susceptable to violent overthrow.

That is for piss-ant 3rd world nations (like we used to be back pre-Civil-War), not for the pre-eminent world power....

I leave you with this quote...

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.
Samuel Adams

Alexander Tyler, (in his 1770 book, 'Cycle of Democracy' )

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over a lousy fiscal
responsibility, always followed by a dictatorship. The average of the world's great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years.
These nations have progressed in this sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to complacency;
from complacency to apathy;
from apathy to dependency;
from dependency back again to bondage."

To break the cycle you must get people to act.  As Mao said " power comes from the barrel of a gun."

I believe Stalin Said "If you control the ballot, you need not worry about the outcome"

John Brown's violence wasn't directed against the Union but against a slave-holding state.
