Sure. Stand still in a combat zone.
J/K. An officer must sign off on whether you were wounded during action with the enemy. That's easier for an officer to do than it is for an enlisted member. |

I would believe so...when I was in the service, anyone who was putting in for medals/awards for themselves was looked down upon |

Yeah...I frowned on it. They went ahead and did it anyway. Officers put themselves and each other in for medals. EM had to have them approved by officers. You could apply for a Purple Heart if you were wounded by enemy action in combat. It was supposed to be an entitlement. I saw several guys with minor wounds who wouldn't put in for one. Wounds like grazes and small cuts caused by shrapnel. Not disabling wounds. At least THEY had integrity. FWIW, I saw a number of guys do things that were certainly worthy of a Bronze Star and not get put in for one.

You can not request a Purple Heart for yourself.
You must be RECOMENDED for a Purple Heart, and it is approved only after the injury has been verified. You can write up your own Purple Heart recomendation. |

we just put a ww2 battle of the bulge veteran in for one. he was wounded in the leg and spent 3 weeks away from his unit. the only reason he didn't get it in 1944 was he wanted to get out after the war as fast as possible, he would have had to stay 2 more days to have his purple heart awarded. he was 19 years old and just wanted to go home!......my company had representitives from our rep bud cramers office present as well as the alabama adjuatant general, a mg and a bg!he was on the news and in the papers in 3 counties, we were proud to be a part of it!..........we made a 79 year old CIB WEARING , 2 BRONZE STAR FOR VALOR SOLDIER MIGHTY HAPPY!.......
