The forward grip is only necessary if you have a bunch of accessories mounted to your weapon. I keep mine pretty simple, so there is plenty of real-estate for my hand.
The problem with foregrips is two fold:
1. They make going prone that much more difficult
2. People put death grips on them harming their accuracy.
Number 2 is the big worry for most, as too much front grip has a tendancy to make the shooter miss. 90% of the weapon control should be from the strong hand pushing the weapon back into the shoulder. The other 10% should be up front basically steering the muzzle. Not closing your fist around the grip helps keep this ratio even during stress. Grip the foregrip about like you would position your weak hand if firing a pistol, thumb pointing to target, only not as forcefully.
If you really want one, the Surefire grip with light is the way to go. You may need a grip, so why not get one that is also a pretty good light?
I would have another light on my carbine too...
