For example:

www.coldsteel.com/13rtk.html

Is it superior for slicing and penetration or what?  Also, does Cold Steel make good knives?

In that case, bigass knife. Appeals to Japanophiles.

Very strong tip on a Tanto makes for a good push knife.

Tanto blades have a lot of power in the tip and are very strong there.  Very good for puncturing stuff.

Penetration. It can go through a car hood. It can!! I saw it on TV.

Seriously, penetration.

CS makes awesome knives.

The tanto - It's designed to look like the tip of a samourai sword.  Sure, there's two cutting edges and the tips are probably a little stronger, but this is my opinion - it is mostly marketing hype.  (carrying a Camillius mini-Cuda with a tanto tipped 154 steel blade right now.)

The thick spine extends further towards the tip, strengthening it.

hmm..  seven inches, strong tip for deep penetration...  I shall call him tanto.

Bingo.  It's for strength.  Not the best cutting knife.  But for brut strength in a blade its hard to beat.

A tanto design is best for slashing and thrust and penetration.  I know, sounds like a bad porno.

The tanto is just a traditional Japanese style dagger.  You had the Katana as the sword, the Wakizashi as the short sword (side arm if you will) and the Tanto as the dagger.

The modern Tanto is just a traditionally styled blade.

So which is it? I thought it was tan-toe, but I'm not a "knife guy" or anything. A guy at work who saw my CRKT M16 said he liked ton-toe blades like that. Ton-toe doesn't sound as menacing in my opinion.

I have several tanto profile folders (Emerson, Benchmade, and CRKT mostly) and as general purpose knives, they are probably not the best choice. If all you're doing is cutting rope and opening boxes, I would suggest something more traditional. Maybe an Emerson Commander, etc.

HEre's a bit from what I read in a few history books-

In Traditional/feudal Japan, although the Samuari did have loads of swordfights in battle, etc. they did their best to keep blood of f of themselves or touch dead bodies. To do so caused some sort of difilement, and the person in question would go to a shinto shrine to be purifed.

One of the ways you could show your true skill and bravery in a large battle was to take the head of a enemy general or leader.  If you could do so, it was a HUGE amount of honor on you and your sept in the clan-it was even bigger if the head you took was one of your Daimyo's (clan lord) bitterest enemys.

soo..the Tanto blade was handy for such a thing. It allowed a way to remove it (assuming your Katana did not do the job) or carry it without getting the blood on yourself or touching a dead body. Also carrying the head of a General around a battlefield was a BIT de-moralizing to the enemy....

Then of course, you would take said head to your clan lord for viewing, and then after the viewing was done, you would send the head back to the enemy as a slap to the face.

As someone said, the Tanto was the utlity knife for the swordsman..ETA-oh yeah..in 1600 at the battle of Sekigahara, Lord Tokugawa took 40,000 heads in the battle that established the Shogunte that ruled from 1603-the late 1800s(meji restoration). Now how is that for kicking ass and taking names?

I hear rednecks pronounce it that way all the time.  Anybody with any sense knows differently.
