Ok fess up what's your go to home defence rifle?  Personally since my house has several hiding places around corners, I value a compact light rifle.  So my go to is my SAR-1.  Looks totally un PC with a 30 round mag in, but I'm about as un PC as they come

Ya know there was a thread a few weeks back called "what's your favorite truck gun" and the overwhelming preference was the SAR.  (I took it as a sign from above that I need to get one of those in 17 days or so).

My preference would be anything with a light on it.

mines a Ruger PC9 with Ghost ring sight with 20 rd mags loaded with Gold Dot 124 gr HP +P with two extra mags in a buttstock pouch.

the ghost ring sight works great in low light conditions.

I would do an AR but all I have are 20 inch uppers.  Come Sept when I swap out the stock on my SAR-1 , it'll be just that much more compact, and a better home defense rifle till I get a carbine built.

I'd pull my Benelli M1 w/ buck and slug....if zombies are at the door, I get the M1A 7.62 out

AK 74 with 30 rounds. I also take it to the range when I will be by myself. I don't actually shoot it that often, but I have shot it enought to know if it every needed to enter a defensive situation--it WILL be ready and not fail.

I don't have a home defense rifle per se.  I have a 1911 with a couple of spare mags.  I think that should be enough "defense" for most conceivable scenarios.  If not, I imagine I can fight my way to the safe, and get out the ARs if necessary.   If I had to pick a rifle, I'd go with the 16" AR.

A 7.62x39 carbine?  Hey I'm all for using a 5.56 carbine (any flavor - with a preference to AR-15s) but a 7.62x39 has some serious over penetration issues.

I hope you live in the middle of nowhere all by yourself.

I'm in the same situation.  Though I'll admit, there are times when a rifle sleeps by the bed with me.

I know about the overpenetration issues with the 7.62x39, that's one reason why I have seached out for good soft point loads.  Barnaul makes a very good 122 grain soft point, that looking at deer that have gone down with it, I'm pretty sure overpenetration would be a moot point as long as it's a COM hit.

Sar, Yes
AR, Yes
Probably grab my Model 10 Smith with 158 gr LSWC HP +P and with the other hand dial 911. I live on the same street as the Police Dept. When I have called them they have been here in couple of minutes. It's nice when they are less that 1/2 mile away.

if you grab a AK you at least know you are going to make it out alive, I don't know about the neighbors, the dog...

I think its a great choice really the sites are really easy to get on target close up.  I am guessing if you use the wolf bi metal FMJ  and make a good body shot hit the round will not go thru the guy then thru a wall.

The wolf has a airpocket and yaws more quickly than normal 762x39 fmj.

Best SP for the 7.62x39 is the Lapula with the 123gr Winchester comming a close second.

No, that is the whole problem with 7.62x39 it WAY overpentrates - even in softpoint form.

It will go in one side - out the other and be a issue down range...

I still tend towards my shotgun, with 00 buck and slugs. I live in the country, alone, with no close neighbors. Now if you're talking zombies or SHTF, either my FAL or a 16" AR. In no case am I concerned about wall penetration. In fact, I WANT to be able to shoot through a wall if needed.
