EXCELLENT movie!!!!!! I've seen it 15 times probably. And now that you mentioned it - I'm watching it again tonight. Freakin' outstanding movie. And its a true story too. Have you watched the interviews of the actual participants at the end of the movie? Great stuff...great stuff... |

I love many of the movies already mentioned above. But many times I actually prefer and well produced documentary to movies. I'm different from most people in that I don't like a lot of flash or special effects, etc. I just want the story. The set of documentary's aired by the Discovery Channel (or was it TLC?) back a few years ago about Vietnam were the best ones I've seen. They did one about the Ia Drang Valley and interviewed several of the real people that were there, including Hal Moore, Joe Galloway and Sgt. Savage. Then there was one about Tet, one about the Battle For Hue City, one about the Seige at Khe Sahn, one about the nurses and one about Hill 875. This was probably the best collection of documentaries I've seen concerning war on tv.
But as for some other movies not listed yet, I'll recommend Flight Of The Intruder (about A-6 pilots and fictional although partially based on actual event) in Vietnam. Another would be Bat 21 which is a true story about an electronic warefare officer on an RB-66 who was shot down and who dodged the enemy on the ground in hostile territory for a number of days before being rescued. And while controversial in nature, A Bright Shining Lie starring Bill Paxton as John Paul Vann is a decent movie concerning Vietnam and offers a look at the war in a manner we rarely see it, mostly in it's beginnings and the final stage. While it focuses on many of the negatives, there is stuff to be learned from it. |

Although not well-received by critics, I very much enjoyed "Bat 21."
And, someone else has seen "A Midnight Clear." Interesting story, worth a watch. "Soldier of Orange" (look it up, the credits will amaze you) is one of the best war films ever made, and one of my top ten favorites of any genre. "The Victors" and "The Young Lions" are both classics, and worth watching over and over. One not on the list: "A Time to Love and a Time to Die" (1958, John Gavin), based on Erich Maria Remarque's ("All Quiet on the Western Front") novel about German soldiers in WWII. Truly an amazing film, especially considering it was made in the late '50s. My favorite version of "All Quiet on the Western Front" is the made for TV version starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine (?!). It's well worth the time, and doesn't look like a TV movie. |

Add young lions to the list. its a nice ww2 movie.
But for sanity's sake DO NOT WATCH THIN RED LINE! It has very litte combat and is mind numbingly boring and long. After I got through with it I wanted nothing more than to find the author and beat him to death with the video box. If you choose to watch it anyway you will sincerely regret it. mark my words.

"Uncommon Valor" was pretty good too, about a group of Vietnam vets that return to south east asia to rescue American POW's that were left behind after the war ended. starring Gene Hackman "Good Morning Vietnam" with Robin Williams was a good movie |

lots of great action scenes when he used the old Royal AF sea plane to bomb the German U-Boat and when he dropped that torpedo from the barge to sink that submarine. |

For some GREAT, but lesser known war movies, try...
"Dark Blue World", a movie about Czech pilots flying for the RAF during WWII. Awesome movie, great special effects and good acting. Kind of sad, but visually stunning. "The Lighthorsemen" Australian movie about the last successful cavalry charge in history, at Beersheeba during WWII. The end charge is one of the most impressive scenes ever put to film. "Purple Hearts" starring Ken Wahl. Tho essentially a love story set in Vietnam, the battle scenes are good, and there's lots of them. "Bravo Two Zero", about the SAS mission to scuttle Saddam's Scuds. Cool movie. "Winter War", about the Finnish fight against the invading soviet army. Superb action, even tho the movie is condensed from a miniseries (ala Das Boot), it's still fantastic. |

Revolutionary War?
Find a copy of "April Morning". It was made by Hallmark. It starred Tommy Lee Jones, Rip torn, Susan Blakely and Chad Lowe. It was made for TV and put out on VHS. It's basically about the stand of the minutemen against the British attempt to confiscate guns and ammunition at Concord. The second half is especially good when the British attempt to come back the same way they invaded and are cut to pieces a bite at a time by ambushing colonists. |
