Seriously...am I the only person here that has noticed that, despite our wide differences, people here generally have similar interests, thought patterns, etc.....and generally use logic, or at least understand the concept.
The real world does NOT operate like this. As I get older, interacting with the real world becomes harder and harder. So, who thinks having ARFCOM as a refuge makes it harder to communicate with the "average idiot"...knowing you can always come here and rant about the idiot, instead of actually making an effort to talk their language? |
As I get older it doesn't get harder to deal with people at large, I get less interested in dealing with people at large.
I have a inside joke with a coworker, "Caffiene is a hell of a drug."
I see stupid people. They're everywhere.
But damned few of them reside here in ARFCOM-Land. |
I find that arfcom makes it EASIER for me to interact with people in the "real" world.
As an academic with no social life (and a fiancee living three states away) I don't really interact a whole lot with people. Spending time in discussion, argument and fun on arfcom is actually improving my people skills, as ironic as that may sound.. I also think it is useful to learn how to argue with people that you really, really disagree with - and maybe even see their side of the argument, even if you don't agree. |
I have a hard enough time operating in a "normal" society. I doubt ARFCOM has much sway on my capacity for idiots.
I believe we are the majority. The so-called fly-over States contributed much to the success of our POTUS getting elected. Those States, in the majority, support the constitution and the Bill of Rights.
And I seriously enjoy encountering people with liberal opinions. I have found (I swear this is truth) that most liberals are easily swayed. You DO know what constitutes a liberal, right? Being UNINFORMED. When provided with the correct information and an engaging tone, you can move ANYONE. So don't distance yourself. Embrace it and start converting the left. |
I'm the kind of person who loves a good debate and talking politics, and I get to get alot of it out of my system here instead of making enemies of customers and freinds.
Somebody needs to start a good union thread however... i love those. |
To use a quote from the famous cult film Pulp Fiction, "...you's a smart muh fukka, that's right!" I have seen the same communication maturity in myself. |
OHHHH! MAN! I am sooo pro-union and I KNOW that is very unpopular here. |
It has helped me actually. I was never involved in many political debates until the past few years. So by being here, seeing some of you folks in action and having the trolls to practice on, I have become a pretty seasoned and effective debater.
So while that doesn't lessen my encounters with idiots, I am at least better prepared to shut them up in a hurry, because I know what buttons to push thanks to experience gained here. |
ARFCOM is my refuge from the stupidity banging on my gate. |
No we actually like some socialists, just not in this country. |
Well, I have been slapped a few times for asking if I could stick it in her pooper and take pictures, but that's about it. |
What is this "normal society" of which you speak? |
+1 |
Hmmm, maybe it's time I paid you another visit |
I dont know I sometimes get urges to blurt out IBTL,PIE!, and +1
Damn, that didn't take long at all! |
Is someone implying that ARFCOM is somehow not "normal"? I thought it was the rest of the world that has become somewhat strange..... |
I live and work so far from 'normal' society I come here to escape back.
Around here, normal society is pushy liberal anti-gun soccer moms in SUV's and rowdy urban alternative lifestyle street people who wear chains, carry switchblades, and hate everyone who carries a gun, besides themselves. No, Arfcom doesn't make that any harder to deal with.
I've never interacted well with society. Too many people with their heads up their asses. I can get along with just about anybody, but I mostly choose to avoid having to act friendly for the sake getting along. This doesn't go over too well at work, but they're used to it.
I have always felt that 95% of the world is stupid. I sometimes actually enjoy watching the stupidity in action. Usually though, I get frustrated by it. But, I think my axiom is wrong. An upward revision is necessary.
My first report card from Kindergarten contained the note: "Does NOT play well with others." Arfcom has not changed that.
Yup. |
Check out the big brain on DK-Prof! |
Face to face human interaction is HIGHLY overrated. At least it is when you're me.
Big brain AND wooden shoes!! Form a line, ladies!! |
I have always had problems dealing with people. AR15.com might make it abit better really.
I'm not anti-social, I just can't stand idiots. This includes 95% of everyone I meet in public or meet in a mall. I endure Wal-Mart for cheap ammo. Grocery stores are hell.
This is one of the few forums that stimulates the 'Ol Gourd'. I may not post much but I read a lot of things that make a difference. SlackO |
Every year I come here for about 6 months or so, read and participate in a bunch of threads and then I think I'm ready to head back out into the big wide world.
BZZZTT! Here's a shock - it ain't normal out there! Of course, that explains why I have to come back here - for rehab This place helps me keep my sanity in a world of fools, and I don't suffer fools lightly. |
+1 Of course, it has its downside... Every once in a while, out in wetworld, I'll bring up a reference to something here only to be greeted with blank stares: "get both!" "I like pie" "stick it in....." |
Society?
Let me look up the definiton and I'll get back to you. |
I still bear the scar of one of the few. |
I find myself using words from here.
Asshat Fucktard Get both pie etc People look at me strangely Of course, they did that before too.... |
"In an insane society, the sane man inevitably appears insane.: I think Mr Spock said that, but it's pretty cool. Carry on. |
Yeah. ARFCOM has opened my eyes so to speak. I know more about US politics and stuff now.
People here are so liberal, so its hard to speak with many. Nobody knows what "pie" is, so I say "I like pie" alot |
ARFCOM has really been responsible for getting in touch with my 'political' side, as such I don't suffer foolish democraps and liberals lightly any more, I've become quite alienated from much of my extented family, I got into a somewhat heated debate with my bil and fil a few months ago, it wasn't pretty.......

I think there's something to this, but, on the other hand, it's next to impossible to disagree with anyone in here either without the conversation degenerating VERY quickly. There are folks in here who are the execption, for sure, but I can count the ones I've met on the fingers of one hand. The cuckoo clocks in the real world can't follow a complicated or logical train of thought, but many of the folks in here don't WANT to follow a complicated or logical train of thought. And the anonimity of cyberspace breeds a lot of rudeness that simply does not (and for the most part cannot) happen in face to face dialogue. I don't mean to bash the people in here really, the medium is part of the problem. Electronic communication between strangers does not allow for communication to occur the way humans actually do it in reality. Body language, facial expression, tone of voice, background information about the speaker are all crucial parts of human communication. All that very important stuff is pretty much eliminated in a posting forum. Gremlins and icons help a little, but are a very poor substitute. |

Boy DK in your field fighting the gun rights issue I would assume would be one real uphill battle! As for me, it's made little difference other than giving me more ammunition to fight the fight. I'm afraid I am who I am and transparent as a window pane. Liberals tend to shake their heads and conservatives usually take to me. Tj |
