I just looked at a site that said 3K fps was average for .308 from a 16" bbl AR10. I thought nominal MV for .308 from an 18" - 20" bbl was around 2750 fps. I know I'm ignorant, but just how ignorant am I? If I build a 16" L1A1 carbine, am I going to get 3K fps out of it with milsurp?

OK, I'll bite, where did you see that?

I believe 308 Match is ~2660fps range....

Only thing that MAY approach that might be those Hornady Light Magnums........doubtful.

Maybe I misread it.

110gr bullet it could be possible, but i don;t know about ot of a 16in barrel. 18 maybe 16 I don't know.
course I don;t really know anyway, but hey with a light bullet why not 3k/sec might be doable

So (and please ignore me if the question is an imposition - I'm way over my head on this) if I have a .308 with a 16" bbl and I shoot 147gr milsurp, I'm looking at what? About 2000 fps? Will 2000 fps (or whatever the MV is) give reasonable terminal performance?
