NAJAF, IRAQ: Iraqi national guards take position in the Old City of Najaf during clashes between radical Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr's Mehdi Army militia and US-led Iraqi forces 24 August 2004. Hundreds of Iraqi national guardsmen and US troops were deployed around Najaf's holy shrine, ahead of what officials said was an imminent assault on the militia stronghold. Heavily armed and helmeted Iraqi national guardsmen and US marines were seen fanning out across the Old City around the shrine, an AFP correspondent said. "We have no orders as of now to move forward to the shrine. We are on patrol to guard the neighbourhood," said Marine Captain Nick Sims. The troops took up position in houses, against walls and behind lamp posts, as the occasional crash of heavy fire could be heard in the background. Earlier, Iraqi national guardsmen came under heavy fire from militiamen, shooting back as they advanced down Medina Street, which runs parallel to the Imam Ali mausoleum.
