Has anyone taken an A2 grip and made it into an A1 grip?

I hate that finger groove, and I'm wondering if anyone has removed it, and what if any problems did you have.  It looks pretty straight forward, but I'm mostly concerned with taking a file to the thing and finding a void in there.  That would ruin the whole thing.

Thanks.

Why not just buy an A1?

It's what, $8 to replace it? Be the first or fill the void with epoxy. Planerench

I think I'm getting an A1 from CDNN with a stock I bought.  If you want it its yours for free, but you pay the shipping.

I bought one from CDNN (I think it was them) about 1.5 years ago.

I just sent an email to scottryan about one he's selling for $3.

I'm bored, so was just looking at it and wondering if anyone had ever tried it.  Kind of a shame that it just sits there - I'll never use it.  Normally, I'm too busy to even think about doing it, but as I'm unemployed...

Markm,
Sure I'll take the A1 grip from ya.  Let me know how you want me to pay you.  Thanks.

Hehe, I removed my finger groove with a file. Why not just get an A1? Cause I'm cheap and it took me 5 minutes with a file as opposed to waiting 4-5 days for delivery. Looks fine too. There was NO void.

I'll let you know when my package gets here.  Probably today or tomorrow.  If they included it for free like the sight says, I'll IM you.

Don't you carry yours by resting your index finger under that grip?

I did the same - the only issue is the plastic looks 'greyish' at at that point and a bit 'rough' compared to the smoother plastic next to it.  Purely a cosmetic issue.

Oh heck no!  That sucker causes me more pain...   I HATE that damn bump!  I tried that and it put a dent there.  Ouch!

To get rid of the "grey" area after sanding/grinding use a heat gun or flame of some sort to melt the micro fibers that are raised from sanding. Start slow and do not let the grip heat up too much. I normally use a propane torch and quickly "sear" the surface and it matches almost perfectly.

Have fun.

This is very nice to hear. I sanded down the bump in my Walther P99's trigger guard. I may have to try this. It would be a bit more trickier inside that enclosed area and with the trigger there. I'm not so sure I want to take apart the lower portion of the pistol though. I've down the entire top portion no problem however. I could try heating up a piece of metal super hot with a torch and placing it a millimeter above the sanded area. That may work I would think.

Edited to add:

I tried it with a grill lighter on the lowest flame and tried it. It took away a lot of the grey discoloration, but it's still slightly there. It looks a lot better than it did though. I'm worried about melting the plastic (already slightly singed it in places around the lip of the trigger guard) though, so I think I'm going to quit instead of trying to heat it any further.

Normally it gets pretty close to the color. I have even been able to get a smooth or textured finish depending on how close the flame is.  I use the heat from the propane flame NOT the direct flame to smooth it.  I've done several different guns but I practiced on both the AR grips and plastic HK SEF lowers first. I'm left handed and removed the buldge on the HK grips for a more ambi grip.

I'd love to send you some pictures but I don't get back to Texas until December. If you kick me an email in December I can take and send you some pictures. Until then I'm stuck working in Saudi Arabia.  Its killing me to miss the AR15 shoot in October.

I used to switch the pistol grips on my A2 model rifles in the Army with A1s for the same reason... I hate the bump.

It's better with more bumps... especially when they are soft.
