Response to Reply #10 18. dude do you know anything about balistics? do you know anything about guns? the bullet used in the AR15 and M-16 is the .223 remington, which is a varmint cartridge. squirrels are........varmints, therefore and AR15 or M16 would be perfect for shooting squirrels  |

Hmm, having never shot a squirrel with a .223, I'm no expert on the subject, but I would think that the velocity that round hits the squirrel with would be enough to ensure there wouldn't be much squirrel left afterwards....
anyone care to shed a little light? |

Well I know a guy who shot a squirrel with a 7MM Remington Mag.
I wasn' there but it had to do some serious damage. He never did find the squirrel. CRC |

+1. My dad used to hunt them all the time, and as a kid, it was my favorite meat. Can't remember what it tastes like now, but I do remember that I did like it. |

I have shot several rats with .223 Winchester 45 gr. varmint rounds. It made more of a mess than the .308 ballistic tips.

Some of those bushy-tailed rats have rabies. I am not willing to risk an infection. .458 SOCOM, minimum. Going after squirrels with a .223 is like climbing in the lion cage at the zoo.

Yes, squirrel IS pretty tasty. I have eaten it on a couple of occasions. If you will pardon the cliche'...It actually DOES kinda taste like chicken. (sorta like rabbit) Mind you...The squirrels I ate were ones we shot...out in the forest, in Pennsylvania...NOT some "city squirrels" that feed on garbage and stuff (If they even do eat garbage) I remember hunting squirrel with my uncle when I was a boy...Where I was born in Pennsylvania, there is "squirrel season" (or maybe it is actually "small game season")...At any rate, you hunt them to eat them. No different than hunting/eating rabbit. |

The tree rats I shot were from way out in the forest as well. Just had no desire to eat them so I gave them to someone who would.
This thread reminds me of when I was real young. We had two ground squirrels that kept chasing me whenever I got close to their hole. My dad got mad and grabbed the Rem 700 in .30-06. He chased them into a 4 inch tile, loaded a 220gr silver tip and told me to stand over the other end of the tile but to stay clear. He stuck the barrel in his end and fired. All I saw was clumps of fur flying out my end. No more chippmonks. |

I've shot squirrels with the following:
12 gauge .410 .22LR .22WMR .50 cal blackpowder .30-06 .25-06 All were edible afterwards. The last three were all one time deals. Deer hunting and figured "what the hell!". The muzzleloader squirrel was at a range of 20 yards. 100 gr. of FFg Goex and a 385 gr. Great Plains Bullet. All he was missing was one front leg. The .30-06 squirrel was at around 60 yards. 150 gr. PSP. Missing his head and one front leg. The .25-06 squack was shot at a range of 30 yards. 90 gr. HP. Missing both left legs. Knocked him about 30 yards as well. If my goal was to exterminate the squirrels, .223 would be pretty good. Since my goal is to eat them, .22LR is perfect. |

You're right that 22LR is plenty gun for squirrels if you want to eat them. Like most wild game, they taste best in the fall when they're fat and happy and all set for winter. So which one of us wrote that over at DU?
