Velodyne is always a solid bet. Not the cheapest, though.
I must agree on the assessment of Bose. Suck-o-rama. The very worst price/performance ratio
on the consumer market, bar none.
Bose has never held THX certification and has never been licensed for Dolby Digital technology, or DTS, or SDDS, or any "open" licenseable sound processing or multichannel format. This in part due to the fact that their products are incapable of meeting even the most basic set of technical requirements that the various license holders demand of any equipment that is to be licensed.
It's not that Bose CAN'T make their equipment meet the most basic technical specifications that are accepted through the industry, it's that they WON'T. They crutch engineer everything to death. Tweaked EQ curves, distortion that makes things sound fuller, stupid stuff like that.
Bose doesn't publish equipment specs. That's because they don't want you to see just how
awful their equipment measures against even the CHEAPEST competition.
Independent labs have tested many models of Bose equipment and published the results. They're laughable, but Bose always threatens to sue anyone who does that, even if the reporting is straight
lab data without opinions offered. Not hearsay, evidence. They'll sue anyway.
Bose...you can do better, but you can't do worse. Really.
Sell that stuff off and get something good. You won't regret it.
