Yes,there is a picture of me wearing MarPat, and I am really in a bind as to what to do with it.

The jacket was GIVEN to me as a gift by Captain Brian Chontosh (I am sure Helldog40,another certified Marine, had a LOT to do with it ) ,as well as a patch from his unit.So I don't know what to do.

On the one hand,I do not want to insinuate I am a former Marine.Everyone here knows I am NOT one.But,on the other hand,I would like to wear the jacket that the brave Captain gave me,in HIS honor ..................................and to honor all other Marines.

Heck,I don't give a shit if anybody wears jump wings,82Abn patches,etc.....as long as they are not in uniform .I mean legs pretending to be paratroopers

Just for references sake, the boonie hats came in three "basic styles" in the Vietnam era, and seem to have been resurrected in the same patterns today:

1) Army (and local manufacture) Tiger stripe - fairly form fitting with a very short (like 1-3/4") brin that really couldn't be turned up at all

2) Army (USGI- also adopted by other services) - Slightly higher in the crown, added those rediculous "shell loops" (great for hanging grenade pins off of, but not much else) with a 2" brim. Brinm could be turned up slightly

3) USMC "leaf pattern" cammo - higher still in the crown (better ventilation) and a 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" brim that was also slightly more "offset" from the crown and would never lay plat out. This led to various styles of folding, from the "Slip Mahoney" (turned up only in front), to the "Aussie style" (turned up on ojne side, to the "cowboy style" (turned up on both sides) to the "scrunched all around from wearing under a steel pot" style.

The USMC pattern always did a better job of sund and rain dterrance due to the larger brin...since Marpat is unique to the Marines, I can only guess that the hat is in a similar pattern.

I don't have one, but maybe EdSr knows for sure?

Alright seriously now ,those loops are not shell loops you looney! Anyone who used one, knows that all kind of stuff was stored in them by the imaginative boonierat of the 60's-early 70s(cigaretts,etc).The main use is to stick small branches to break up your face's outline....although I have never seen a picture of one being used like that.I suppose nobody wanted to look stupid wearing branches once back on their fire base,so we took them off once out of the boonies.


Now,can I wear my jacket or not?

No.  I am saying you have the right to wear what you want.  You are not an impostor.  Those who ARE impostors that say they are Marines when they are not will eventually have their asses handed to them, MARPAT or no MARPAT.

Ed Sr. was GIVEN his MARPAT by someone who has earned it.  He should wear it with pride in the spirit that it was given.
