At Gunstock last year I saw a set at one of the venders tables.

I THINK it was J&T.

I could see wood furniture on a FAL, but an AR? I just can't see it. And I like wood rifles!

Is it a good idea to put a heavy wooden buttstock on an aluminum receiver?

Springfield Armory, Inc used to make a set LONG, long ago.  Wood can look pretty good on an AR-15, as it can on most guns, if it's not cheap.  SA,inc's looked good.

The major problem with wood stocks is the thinness of the wood around the top of the buffer tube.  It has to stay very thin there to clear the charging handle and it can crack if you do much of anything to it, even by accident.

Good for looks, not for use.

For some reason, about three or four years ago I really wanted some wood furniture on one of my ARs bad.
I could not find it back then.  Since then I saw some at a table that model 1 sales had at a gunshow and I lost interest.  The wood was very thin above the buffer tube, as stated above and the handguards looked like the fake paneling on the Vista Cruiser.
