Dear Sir, Please forgive my long delay in replying. I suppose the major difference between a 1911 and an AK-47 is that I might actually use a 1911 to defend myself someday. Barring a civil war or something equally unlikely, I doubt if I'll ever have occasion to use an AK or whatever for anything practical. Also, a tuned 1911 is a great deal more satisfying to shoot as pistol than an AK is as a rifle. Finally, I have no idea where you got the idea that I shot the French Alpine Goats in the Strasbourg Tests. I had nothing to do with these tests. The first I learned of them was in a passing reference from Jeff Cooper in his newsletter. I did publicize them quite a bit, but they were already history when I first learned about them!
Cordially,
Jan Libourel

Sorry it's all bunched together.

Apparently he doesn't see fit to use paragraphs in his construction of a letter.

This is sad...I've read the guy's stuff for years and liked a lot of it (It's "Yon La-BOO-ral" BTW) and thought he was one of us.  I'm going to hope it's maybe Alzheimer's or some other dementia and let it go.

Here is his reply to me concerning the AW issue I brought up in the link above.
Dear Mr. Page,
Sorry, but I remain unrepentant. I know a lot of nice "peaceful" people have
fun with the semi-auto versions of the so-called "assault rifles," and some
like the M1A are used in target competition. Nonetheless, when all is said
and done, they are in fact FIGHTING firearms. For the most part, they are
either "wicked" looking plinkers or they are being kept in anticipation of
using them in a fight...or so it seems to me.
Thanks for your interest.
Cordially,
Jan Libourel

Isn't the 1911 a "fighting firearm"?

Yikes! this is terrible.

I am a subscriber of Gun World because Survival Guide/Self-Reliance Magazine went of business, and the publishers gave me the balance in Gun World issues, I think I will cancel the rest of my subscription and ask for a refund.

I had a subscription to American Survival Guide, which is no longer. In its place I received a subscriptiion to Gun World, and Jan Libourel. I didn't read that issue and it does bother me that he would dis-enfranchise a group of us. And that is what we must remember, we are all shooters. Hunters, target, 3 gun events, or self defense it doesn't matter.
Rather than cancel my subscription, I will email them and complain. That is Gun World and Peterson publishers. I will get my friends to do the same. We can not let the anti-gun lunatics have their way by splitting us up, Remember to Peterson Publisher's that most of us read several of their publications and by the products of their advertisers. We can also complain to their advertisers.
I would assume that there are several other writers that would love his job,if it comes down to it.

I received a halfass reply from him today also. I emailed him the thread when it was going hot&heavy a few months back...

Nonetheless, when all is said and done, they are in fact FIGHTING firearms.

Wow. Jan has an inkling of a clue. Unfortunately, that inkling must have faded away  nearly as soon as it appeared....

Perhaps someone should email him a copy of the 2nd Amendment, and ask where it states that The People cant have a weapon that is made for fighting?

What is this clowns email address?

OK, Gentlemen, here's my original letter to Jan and the response I got back:

To Jan Libourel, (dated 27 MAR 2001)

It was brought to my attention that you seem to have suddenly gone quite
mad, in regard to what guns we should have or not have, based on their
evil looks or fighting status or whatever.  That is absurd.

You were one of my original heroes when I started to get "into guns"
back in 1992.  I lived to read your articles.  I finally learned how to
pronounce your name, so I could quote you and the stats you provided.  I
considered you a True Blue Authority.
Sadly, as time went on and I continued to learn more, I became
disillusioned with most of the gunwriters.  Even you.  And, now, with
this latest information, if confirmed, I'll have to pass on a
subscription to GunWorld, knowing that your views are way out of whack.
Just who do you think you are fooling?  Which guns do YOU think are OK?

Sir, I'm sorry to see things turn out this way.   What a letdown.

The response---(dated 7 MAY 2001)

Dear Mr.---,
Sorry it has taken me over a month to reply to your e-mail of March 27. I
don't get these messages on my office computer but rather on a communal
computer that I don't sit down to very often. I think you misread what I had
to say about para-military, "assault" or whatever you want to call them. If
you had read the offending editorial carefully, I was not prescribing "what
guns we should have or not have." Rather, I was stating what guns I, Jan M.
Libourel, want or like. ARs, FALs, Kalashnikovs, etc., have always left me
cold. However, if they give you pleasure or feeling of security, I certainly
don't begrudge you owning such rifles, and I was certainly not trying to
make common cause with those who wish to deprive you of the ability to own
them. You may note that I continue to give the black rifles extensive
coverage in our magazine. If I were so opposed to them, why would I do that?
In any event, I hope you feel a bit less down on me after reading this and
will continue to read our magazine.
Cordially,
Jan Libourel

I sent him an e-mail back, telling him he was  on my "Hero" list again...

Well, Ok. I guess hes not so bad, after all.  I just wish he would tell John Browning that the 1911 isnt a "fighting" handgun....[;)]

I guess I went off "half-cocked" without looking at both sides of the story.

For what its worth, neither Guns & Ammo nor Shooting Times were interested in running an article on the Tromix Sledgehammer AR-15's.  Gun World picked it up immediately and ran it in the April issue.

I guess "PC" for a magazine's bean counters stands for "profit consideration"...

They're putting in what they know sells their brand of gun news.

Not too many gun magazines interest me cover to cover, so I buy them for the articles I need information from.

Gun Snobs are everywhere. My first experience was with a friend trying to find a holster for his Carter Arms .44spl. The guy behind the gun counter says something like" why would you carry a piece of shit like that when you can own a Sig?" There are days now when I catch myself saying similar things. We just can't let ourselves be divided into groups, it's already been very effective against us as "assault weapons" owners. We need to treat every gun (and everybody else's gun) like it is valuable to the cause, whether sporting or not.
