Painting question

I'm going to be painting a small wooden picnic table.

It had been previously finished with varnish and polyurethane. Can I prime and paint directly over that or will I need to sand it down to bare wood first?

Strip it, sand it, clean it with a sponge, then paint it.

You can paint over it after you remove all the loose coating and dull the gloss area by sanding lightly. You may want to use a bonding primer like Zinnser Bullseye 1-2-3...

What kind of top coat did you want...Glossy, Dark Color?

Dark red, semi-gloss.

Red is one of the hardest to get to cover and one of the quickest to fade. You can get the primer tinted (it will probably look pink) and that will help you cover quicker. Plan on doing multiple coats when painting in red. If you are thinking of Semi-Gloss you may step up to Gloss...it will last longer.
