He's got 2 flag patches, but they are both on the wrong sleeves.  (pic is not inverted cause of the e2)

What is on the side of the rifle?

M24 or M40?

My initial impress is navy, but that is just a guess.

And what is with the skull in heart?

supposed to be taken in Najaf.

This one below is also supposed to be an american.

Is that a CVC helmet?

What forearm is that?

US rank on his chest.
A3 upper with the removable carrying handle under the weapon for whatever reason.

That "thing" on the right side of the rifle looks like a laser range finder. As for Who he is, not a clue, maybe Delta Force or SEAL Team member.

Also, in the bottom pic, that's a neat way to carry your A2 removable sights, I never would have thought of doing that.

The thing on the rifle I believe is a Laser Aiming Module. The guy with the M4 is most likely keeping it there for storage.

ETA: Rifle appears to be the M40A3 with a Leupold Mark4 M3....

I don't have a clue but would hate to in his sight

You can never guess who is who over there.  We could pretty much wear whatever we wanted in Afghanistan.  As long as our commander didn't have a problem nobody gave a shit.  There's SOOOoooo many agencies over there.  Hell, He could be civilian...

The "Thing" on the side looks like a PAQ-4 but we lowly Tankers didn't get to play with 'em too much (We had better lasers anyway)

It's an "Alkaline Trio" patch

The guy in the bottom picture is wearing his tanker helmet.

His carrying handle is on the bottom of his forarm rail as many troops are starting to carry 'em now to keep 'em handy, and to keep 'em from getting lost.

Bingo!  It is the PEQ-2, combination of a IR laser aiming device, and a IR flashlight.

edited to say:  Never saw one on a sniper rifle before.

I would guess Delta Force. Look at the Pork Chops he's sportin'. Definately not military standard "high and tight" hairstyle.

It's actually a very good idea, considering he's a tanker.

Yes its a CVC helmet.  Comes in handy since he's an Abrams commander.  I think its a Surefire M73 forearm on his M4.

The sniper has an AN/PEQ-2 IR illuminator on his rifle.

Is the AN/PEQ-2 a product improvement of the 'PAQ-4 or something totally different?

On my unit's deployment they (The DOD) issued us the 'PAS-13 Thermal sight but I've never seen the 'PEQ-2.

I like the idea so much that instead of getting a removable rear sight(MAD BUIS) I'm getting a removeable carry handle and a tatical forearm and mounting the carry handle on the forearm like that. It'll give me something to hold onto. Neat Idea, thanks for the pic.
