Looks like they may make Marijuana Legal in Alaska. Seems like a good idea to me. Heck, when a government can outlaw a plant we don't have to go very far to see guns being taken next. Come on Alaska, let's start the legalization ball a rollin'(pun intended.LOL) and vote "Yes" for legalization.

Think about it like this: If they legalize pot then that'll free up all the DEA agents to go after "real" drugs like crack cocain and herion. Seems like those drugs are more of a hazard then pot ever will be. If you drink and smoke you might as well kill two birds with one stone(again, pun intended.)and just smoke a joint.

From what I hear most of the pot heads are already there living in "communes" out in the boonies. 4x8 sheets of plywood and duct tape are hot commodities from what I understand as well.

hah...thats been coming up every year, for years. Alaska has a huge drug using group. Hell, after my parents got divorced, I heard all the stories about my mom growing pot in the windows of her apartment in Fairbanks
 And I was born there!

Doesn't matter much what the State does. It's still illegal under Federal law.
If I recall correctly, Arizona, Washington and California have had referendems wanting to legalize it. The Feds made it clear they would step up prosecutions in those States once it was legalized. Law enforcement full employment act. |

Case in point. How many of you even thought about getting an AR BEFORE the AWB of '94?? Once you heard that the ban was going into effect how many of you rushed out to buy a "pre-ban" AR before the ban started?? I'd be willing to bet that alot of people couldn't have gave two nickels about owning an AW before the ban but now that's all you hear about. All that the ban did was make more people want AW's, not less. Same deal with Marijuana proibition. It wasn't much of a problem back in the 30's but when they made it a prohibited substance then everyone started doing it to see what the big deal was. The sooner they legalize it the sooner the black market will dry up.

Because it doesn't stay in their own homes! Abortion can be termed what you do with your "own body" as well, and yes I'm against that too. We've got enough problems with the drunks in this state, why add to the problem? Personally if Joe Pot Head smokes up in his own house and doesn't cause any trouble, I'll never know about it & don't give a rip. Now if you decide to make it legal, do you really think it'll stay behind closed doors? I for one don't want pot heads smoking at the city park, outside my office building, while driving down the highway, or any place near me & my family. And I do value freedom, and in this case it's the freedom to keep pot heads away from me

If it's legalized it'll be treated the same as alcohol is treated now. If you drink a beer in the park or while driving you'll get busted for Public Intoxication, plain and simple, same rules will apply to weed, it'll still be kept behind closed doors or in "Coffee Shops". I don't see a problem with it being made legal unless you're selling it on the black market, in which case you'll lose your "business" over night. Why buy it when you can grow your own.

You make a good point. The flip side as I see it is this: How many DUI's do we have now? Quite a few (on the rise here in AK which is bucking the national trend). How many stoners are busted while driving right now?..probably not too many. However, make it legal & easier to get & I bet more people will smoke it, drive, ect. So I bet you'd see more & more instances of pot heads driving & risking others lives besides their own. If someone is growing their own for themselves, like I said I'll never know. Good for them, have fun. I don't want it out in public. If you make it legal as long as you stay in your home, that'll fly like a rock! Easier to not even open that can of worms IMO. And the saga continues

The dif. is in the level of penalty. In CA pot under a certain ounce level is "decriminalized", meaning, it is a small fine and no criminal record, if I recall correctly. Not "legal", but definitely nothing to wet the bed about, either.

The problem is that if they do it in Alaska the state will attract all the lowlifes of the lower-48 to the state, placing huge demands on the welfare system etc. Look at Amsterdam, pretty city ruined by junkies.

Dude, they want to legalize Pot, not herion. I'd be willing to bet that you come into contact with many people each day that smoke weed every now and again and you don't even know it. Just like the majority of people who drink alcohol are good, upstanding people and only a few fall into alcoholism and become dregs on our society, many smoke pot and NEVER go on to harder drugs or have any other problems with it other then it being illegal and risking jail time if they get caught. In other words, the "cure" is worse then the "illness". In a free society a person should be allowed to do what every they want as long as it doesn't endanger or infringe on anyone elses Rights. The way I see it, if you smoke a joint in your home or in a Coffee Shop it's not any worse then having a few drinks in your own home or in a Bar. If you're going to keep pot illegal then stop being a hypocrit and outlaw alcohol too, otherwise legalize pot and let people have a choice, that's what America is suppose to be about isn't it, Choice.
