Which part of Visio? Visio is kind of an all-in-one
package. Might have better luck finding a package
that supports exactly what you are looking for.

Generic flow charting?
UML Software design?
Ghantt charts?

If you're wanting to connect to a database, reverse engineer the entity-relationship design, and then publish your changes back to the database.... good luck.

If you're looking for Powerpoint on steroids, there's a bunch of vector chart/drawing apps out there that will do it.

I've been playing with a few...
Network Notepad is the only one I've used that I don't hate...
