SOUTH BEND, Ind. A man says he thinks South Bend police overreacted when they used a stun gun on his 65-year-old father after he wandered into a busy street.
Police Capt. John Williams says the officer had no way of knowing that Thompson Thewo has Alzheimer's disease.

Thewo is from Zambia and was visiting family members in South Bend.

A South Bend officer shot Thewo with a Taser when he refused to come out of the street. Thewo's son, Matthew, says his father suffered deep cuts to his face, a fractured arm and a dislocated elbow when he fell.

Matthew Thewo told the South Bend Tribune for a story today that he thinks police were too aggressive.

Williams says the man could have been more seriously injured if the officer had not prevented him from walking into traffic. He wasn't arrested.

Thewo's son said he wandered away from a relative's house while his wife was on the telephone.

knowing NOTHING more about this story than what I read, I'd say sue his ass.  I've seen a few dozen alzheimers patients and while some of them seemed crazy as shit, NONE of them were robust enough to be threatening....

as usual, there is another side to this story, but knowing just this,  tazering an old alzheimers man is wrong.

Tasers aren't cheap, and dammit, we need to use them on something.

Or do you just propose that we keep bendng over and taking it in the ass from those sworn to "protect and serve"?

Again, how do we tell a good cop from the JBT swine?

Here's the problem: I have seen officers on this board claim that according to their departmental use of force matrices, the Taser is the next step after verbal command.

Gee, I guess that makes sense now, huh?

Q, to be honest, it does sound like a resort to shooting law enforcement officers "on sight" if there was no other option.

If I'm misinterpreting that, then please clarify your statement.

Tazing an old man, in this case, is a crime. IMO. Since you refuse to answer my question about how to tell a good cop from a bad cop, then you have no currency with me. If people  cannot be safe from the "police" in this country anyway, they have a right to defend against them, using deadly force if needed. YOU ARE THE ONE STARTING THIS SHIT, NOT ME. Since you cannot or will not give an answer on how to tell those kind of cops apart, then I can say we have a right to defend in all cases. You are part of the problem with your us vs them mindset.

Taser used on confused patient
Police say action taken to keep man safe as he walked in middle of busy intersection.

By PATRICK M. O'CONNELL
Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- A man with Alzheimer's disease who was wandering amidst traffic in the middle of a busy street suffered multiple injuries when a South Bend police officer used a Taser on him Friday night while attempting to coax him to safety.

Thompson Thewo, 65, suffered deep cuts to his face, a fractured arm and a dislocated elbow after the officer tried to keep him out of the Ironwood Drive and Lincoln Way East intersection.

Thewo hurt his face during a fall after he was hit by the first of two Taser probes, then suffered the arm injury when the officer attempted to handcuff him, his son Matthew Thewo says.

Police defended the officer's actions, saying there was no way to know the man was an Alzheimer's patient and that he could have been more seriously injured if the officer had not prevented him from walking in front of traffic.

On Wednesday, Thompson Thewo, visiting the United States from Zambia and staying with family members while he received treatment for Alzheimer's, required surgery to insert metal pegs into his elbow.

"To me, they were way too aggressive with him," Matthew said. "They need to use good judgment when they're looking at someone in the street. If this had been a bad guy and then they had Tasered him, then that's a different story.

"If he had been aggressive or shoved (the officer), then OK, then I can see why they did that. But he was just walking away, and I don't think that's justification for using a stun gun," Matthew said.

But police spokesman Capt. John Williams said the officer, a 13- or 14-year veteran, did what he needed to do to keep Thewo out of harm's way.

"I'm sure that by him Tasering that fellow, that was a last resort," Williams said. "You can take that to the bank."

The police report states the officer repeatedly called for Thewo to come out of the street, but he kept walking north on Ironwood, nearing the Lincoln Way East intersection. The officer tried to handcuff him and pull him back from traffic, but Thewo pulled away and the officer deployed his Taser.

Thewo fell to the ground, but then began to walk away toward traffic. The officer again used his Taser, then called for an ambulance.

"The officer, as far as I'm concerned, didn't do anything wrong," Williams said. "How are we supposed to know that he's an Alzheimer's patient? He was Tased once he put up a struggle."

Thewo was not arrested or charged with any crime, Williams said. Matthew Thewo said his father wandered away from his brother's house while his mother was on the telephone.

The incident has cost the Thewo family about $10,000, Matthew said, because of the trip to the emergency room, additional medical care and changes to travel plans.

Please, convince me that you aren't that fucking stupid?

Do muggers/thugs/rapists//etc? have the authority to make you stop your car? Do they have the right to search your house with PC? Can thugs call for back up and kick your door in and do what their warrant says?

Sincerely, you are a lying police apologist in the same league as john Kerry. Comparing common thugs to police who hace the law on their "side". You are are a simple minded, and, part of the problem in this country.

your only question has been how to tell a "bad" cop from a "good" cop. my reply is that you do it the same way you tell a "bad" non-cop from a "good" non-cop: by observing actions.

They have largely been replaced by OC Spray and TASER, which are both considered less force than any "hands on" technique.  That's what happens when you let the lawyers in risk management have a say in the policies & procedures manual.

I know that a lot of you watch to much spiderman, from your comfy chairs.........................and that is counted as your tactical training.

1) Alzheimer patient
2) From a foriegn country (no English)
3) Wandering into a area where they could be easily killed
4) Apparently mal-nurited, due to the extensive injuries related to falling.

Let's see can't talk with them, since you don't speak the same language. May not be able to reason with them due to their disease. Brittle bones. Headed towards death.

Block them with the arm chair you conduct most of your tactical ops in?
