I'd like to try out this new rimfire caliber, but don't want to spend a bundle. I would kind of prefer a lever-action rifle but would consider any rifle (not handgun). What's a good one for not too much $$$?

Buy a 10/22 magnum.  Then buy a .17HMR barrel for it.

My buddy did it and he has one fun as hell rifle now.

I'm thinking of getting a .17 Mach2 barrel for my 10/22 when they become available.

I've got a Marlin 17V that I picked up for around $200 on sale.  Put on a BSA Sweet 17 scope and it's it a *BLAST* to shoot.  Accurate as hell and just plain fun.

The new 917V model with updated trigger looks *very* interesting.

New England Arms makes a single shot one for less than $150 or so. A buddy of mine has one and has been pleased with it.

Second that on the NEF single shot. I've seen them for $159 retail

I like my 917, shoots good with a good trigger. $179 at Wally World.

Savage has a couple models out, friends have them. They like my Marlin though.

10/22 is something missing from my collection thus far...I didn't know there were different barrels for it.

Why magnum?

Because the .17HMR will only work in Magnum length receivers.  You can use the 10/22 magnum magazines with .17HMR also.  All you have to do is put a .17HMR barrel on a 10/22 magnum and it is instantly converted.

The .17 Mach2 will work in all .22LR firearms.  The ammo for Mach2 is supposed to start shipping next month.  Pretty much every barrel manufacturer will make a .17 Mach2 barrel for the 10/22 LR.

The Mach2 is supposed to be about 300 FPS slower than the HMR.

I picked up a Cz 452 "Varmint" in  .17 HMR

Absolute tack driver w/my Leupold 4.5-14x40!!

Best price I found was  324.99 at  Whittaker Guns

They are listed under "New Rim Fire"

I also have a 452 American in .22lr ......, The Cz is by far the best bang for the buck!!

My buddies Ruger 77/22 & 77/17 both shoot circles around my Cz's....., literally!!...., because he can't get his groupings down to the size of my Cz's!!!!
