I don't know how many times I've heard it, that pistols are insignificant for use in combat. Pistols don't win wars, but damn if they aren't effective against civilians. If S ever HTF in my AO, I'll have a pistol on me.

When a man with a .45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with a pistol will be a dead man. That's an old Mexican Proverb...and it's true.

I can't tell you how many times we've all heard it, pistols don't win wars and it's true alone, pistols don't. But I can't believe they are a completely insignificant tool for use in wars.
I'm just reacting the these shootings that have been taking place recently where the shooters have been using pistols rather than the dreaded "assault rifles". |

Meh, we can still talk guns on Thanksgiving. Pistols are great for what they are. Small, concealable weapons. On you whenever you need 'em, just in case.
If you're expecting a fight, carry a rifle. |

Someone who can't differentiate between immediate incapacitation and killing will be along shortly to correct you OP.

Pistols don't win wars. So if your goal is to win the war, you don't need a pistol.
A pistol MAY help you win a fight. Probably not a rifle fight, but maybe a fist/knife/bayonet fight. So if your goal is to survive that fight, you may want a pistol. |

Well I'm thankful OP hasn't stopped thinking about guns today.

Shotgun with birdshot is superior. Meat-from-bone performance without overpenetration.
You could also have the best of both worlds and use a Taurus Judge. Mine fits great in an Uncle Mikes holster. |

The Russians and Germans used pistols very successfully in WW2....

I'd like to say I am thankful I have a rifle and not just a pistol.

Get both is the correct answer. Learn to transition between them.

I used to think the whole “use your pistol to get to a rifle” was bullshit.
It’s not. |
|
Pistols are hard to shoot well. Be honest with yourselves, who puts in the work with a pistol to actually engage an active threat? Who is good enough with a pistol to take on a guy with less training on a rifle at 25-50 yards? Rifle wins 75% of the time.
Your post counts are too high to be dry firing like you should be doing. |
|
Didn't Cooper have some line about your pistol being needed to fight your way to your rifle?
Also something about "if you don't think you'll need a gun, have a pistol. if you think you'll need a gun, have a rifle, or better, a rifle and a bunch of friends with their rifles" |

OP is fantasizing about executing civilians, on Thanksgiving Day.
That’s not weird at all. |

Pistols are for play; rifles are for real. Now it is a little bit awkward taking a rifle to the grocery store. In my book pistols are an excellent exit strategy. I have no intentions of caring on a fire fight with a pistol; I will leave that to the guys who will show up with rifles to go in for the kill.

I think if you are in a war, engaged in combat, and you are relying on a pistol. Something has gone very, very wrong

I wish we lived in a society that would be accepting of us walking around with rifles on us 24/7 if we chose to do so. But since we don’t it is why we edc pistols. It’s better than a sharp stick.

A loaded Beretta M9 is 2.55 lbs, capacity 15+1 rnds. A single USGI Aluminum 30 rnd magazine fully loaded weights 1.1 lbs ea. I’d rather have 2 mags with an extra 60 rnds of 5.56 than a pistol with 16 rnds of 9mm. Weight isn’t free especially when you are in a light infantry role.

Pistols are the means to get to a long gun. Or buy you time to get your long gun back into the fight when it goes down. Or die with a working gun in your hand still giving them a fight.
And society doesn't let you walk around with a long gun. |

OIF 1 most of the officers and staff NCOs of the 1st Marine Division only rated pistols and there were not enough stock weapons on hand to issue all of them one. Guys ended up carry a lot of Iraqi pick up weapons by the time they stopped in Tikrit.

Mike Day put in work with his pistol. To be fair though most DEVGRU guys i've heard said they don't carry pistols. It's added weight with little reward.

If you got caught under this, the pistol would come in handy.

I recall hearing about a hospital, maybe in Memphis or St. Louis that treated something like 5000 gunshot wounds a year, and had less than 100 deaths. Most victims walked in and out under their own power.
Handguns suck at killing people. They’re pretty good at convincing people who aren’t wearing armor and aren’t dedicated to harming you to stop trying to harm you. They’re way more convenient than carrying an M1 Garand around with you. |
