The talk about drafts and conscription in Ukraine and Russia reminded me I am a wanted man In my country of origin.
All Korean males on their 18th birthday have to report for mandatory military service for two years. The really rich kids from powerful families may be able to skirt the law but most do serve but they may have cushy billets. When I turned 18, my grandmom was awakened at 0500 by ROK MPs pounding on her door. They had an arrest warrant for me for not showing up to boot camp. ?? She told them I was an American and lives in the USA and they didn’t believe her and tore her home apart looking for me. |

So you avoided your obligation to your country not by your parents contributing important financial infrastructure, but simply by fleeing.
Got it. |

Since they couldn't find you, does your grandmother have to serve in your place?

If the country your grandparents emigrated from had a draft, would you feel obligated to go? |

I’m not even Korean and I did a year there defending them from the NORKs. You are welcome OP.

I always wanted to be an international fugitive. That would be an awesome icebreaker.

Step granddad, was a northerner who was a Boy Scout which the norks considered a paramilitary organization and would killed him or imprisoned him, so his folks packed him up and made him walk south before the norks were able to reach his village. He was a smart kid and spoke English. American docs in a mash unit took him in. Just like the tv show. One of the officers took him home to Kansas City. He went to college and med school. Paternal grandfather did two tours in Vietnam in the US army. He was stationed at Ft Lewis for a long time afterward till he retired. |

I had a friend in high school that missed the first couple months of our senior year because he got conscripted or whatever they call it when he was visiting family. It was a big ordeal for his family to get him back.

I'm related by marriage to an Iranian.
He apparently deferred his service to study abroad then stayed here but never became a citizen. When he finally went home for a family event, I can't remember if it was a wedding or a funeral, they arrested him at the airport for desertion. I don't know exactly what was involved in getting him out of Iran without spending years in the military, but I do know it took a long time. When he got back he had suddenly acquired the desire to become American. |

The good news is that you’re an American now and South Korea exists strictly at the discretion of the American voter.
Make sure they don’t forget, they are welcome for our blood and treasure. |

They don’t fuck around and they beat him pretty senseless. They kept him for several weeks till they could prove he was American. Then they just let him go. Criminal!
Anyway, my friend got a postcard from France ordering him to report to Paris for compulsory national service (either as Popo or army) |
