Something I noticed some time ago.

When you look back at people in the '70's and '80's, people just looked OLD.  Take the cast from All in the Family as one example.  Carrol O'connor (Archie) was 47 when the show started.  That is an OLD 47.   "Edith" isn't any better, she was 48 when the show started.

Yesterday I saw a meme of the cast of "Cheers" and their ages.  All of them were in their mid 30's and the old bartender, with one foot in the grave was 58.

My parents are 71 and 64 and just don't look "old" to me compared to looking at how others looked even in the '80's at their ages, and neither of them wear makeup or have any type of cosmetic surgery.

So, are we just not aging like we did even 30 years ago?

People aren't looking older.  Today people are attempting to look younger.  People in the entertainment industry are getting 'tuned up' at much younger ages and the technology to make it look natural has gotten better.

I'd chalk it up to the hairstyles.  Young women from the 60's look old as crap to me if they have that bee hive haircut, and pointy glasses.

I personally have a hard time accepting that I'm "older" than Archie Bunker. But then I observe the way the kids at work refer to me and treat me and I accept the truth.

also...smoking

“Sarah Conner, 35, shot to death in her home”.

That was the first woman killed by Arnold in the first Terminator, at her front door. NFW would I take her for 35 - she always looked over 50 to me.

Yup, and there are a lot of other examples.

Just looking in the family photo album I can see my relatives aged A LOT faster in the 70's and 80's than they do now and we aren't a fancy family, the girls don't wear much makeup or dress expensively.

People who wear suits look older than people who wear t-shirts and shorts.  People with facial hair look older than smooth shaven.  People with gray hair look older than people without.  People who are bald look older than people with hair.  People who smoke look older than people who don't.  People with a lot of stress look older than people without a care in the world.

You can generalize age and and looks easily.

Yeah, I have a baby face without a beard.  I am 45 and regularly have people think I am in my 20's.

Thing is, I work outside for a living, in the harsh Colorado sun, and I never wear sunscreen or use any type of "creams".

Something's in the water.

If you really want an eye opener, watch old episodes of the Johnny Carson Tonight Show and look up the ages of his guests when they appeared

Johnny went gray in his 40s to early 50s.

George C Scott was 43 in Patton.

But then you have Charles Bronson who never aged.

Then I went grey.  At 55 I probably look 55.

But I ain't Archie Bunker old.

Ann Davies (Alice) is a perfect example of someone who would probably cause jaw drops if she were to do one of those "makeover" overhauls. That's a solid body hiding under those maid clothes. I bet Sam would have preferred she had longer hair.

Gandolfini was 38/39 when he filmed season 1 of the sopranos.  Balding or hairstyle can make people look older, some people’s faces naturally look older.

You think about your grandparents, who were always "old" to you.
By 35, they were all they were ever going to be, with the exception of a bowling or card night here and there. They sat in their chairs in front of the tube, watched the news and died.

Our parents fared a little better, with people becoming a little more health conscious.....or not at all.

Enter genX, who are aging well.....if they choose to. They hike, mountain bike, surf, women stay hotter longer and the men...if they really work at it....look, feel and act younger than ever before. Nearly nobody in that age group smokes compared to the rest before. There is an effort to at least try to eat healthy if so inclined.

50 year old people today, even average ones, look nothing like the 50 year old of the 60's.
And not just because today's are fatter.

This is probably a much smaller factor than smoking, etc, but back in the 'old days' of TV and movies, the actors had to wear a shitton of makeup. It's pretty evident in the 'Cheers' cast photo above.

You do realize that those actors were selected for their look for the role, don’t you?

The other year I was looking at some old pics at my dads,  the middle aged moms in my neighborhood growing up were pretty hot. Much better than today.

My grandmother recently died at age 98. At the funeral we saw some old pictures of her when she was late 30's/early 40's, and my sister commented "Wow she always looked old."

When she was 90 she looked 70. But when she was 40, she looked 60.

Cosmetic surgery, makeup and filters. Not hard to figure out.  I live in the midwest and most women in their 30s you'd think were mid 40s.  Mid 40s you'd think mid 50s.

I’m a nurse who does psych assessments in an ER. Roughly 95% of the patients smoke. Even younger patients (18-25) actually smoke.

Besides them I don’t know anyone in my life who smokes.

Smoking today is remarkably indicative or at least correlated to social class.
