This one has them up in arms on another forum. The contention is that the gun is NOT a sniper rifle unless it's being used by a sniper.

-- and according to that logic, a "combat boot" is not a combat boot unless it's being used in combat. An "off road" vehicle is not an off road vehicle unless it's off the road. A handgun is not a hand gun unless it's in the hand.

There's the other side of the argument. That any "long-range" heavy barrel, accurate, scoped rifle is a sniper rifle. There was a link to "sniper rifles"

So, mine's a Rem. 700 PSS (police sharp shooter). It's on the "list" of the VPC. Scope is a Springfield Armory Tactical Govt. in 5.56 mm (rangefinder) 4x - 14x 40 mm w/ 80mm shade, Harris pod, Micheal's tactical sling, and even a rack number from when it was enlisted with the Oregon State Police.

Is it a sniper rifle? I'm not a sniper, but I get pretty close sometimes when I'm hunting.

Funny, I wasn't aware the US Armed Forces used "50 caliber sniper rifles" in the gulf war.........

I thought the U.S. military did use Barret .50 Cal sniper rifles in the Gulf War.
I think it is good that the VPC is getting on Sniper Rifles. When Elk & Deer hunters realize their 30.06's and scoped .270's are being targeted too, they will think about joining GOA.

They were used in the Gulf. In fact a lot of them were reconditioned and sold. I have seen some on Gunbroker...I'll see if I can find one and post it.

How extensively were they used?   To the point that the guns out there being sold are considered "high mileage" and quite rough.


It was discussed a bit on the 50 discussion board at biggerhammer at the url [url]http://www.biggerhammer.net/barrett/wwwboard/[/url] and most felt that getting a new or slightly used M82 was much better than getting a heavily worn former military M82 that could use a rebuild.  If that's any indication as to how much use the guns saw in Desert Storm it should say that they were used quite a bit.

Here in the friendly, happy PRK "sniper rifles" are not yet banned. However, something called a "sniperscope" is. Can you even guess what that might be?
