This one has them up in arms on another forum. The contention is that the gun is NOT a sniper rifle unless it's being used by a sniper.

-- and according to that logic, a "combat boot" is not a combat boot unless it's being used in combat. An "off road" vehicle is not an off road vehicle unless it's off the road. A handgun is not a hand gun unless it's in the hand.

There's the other side of the argument. That any "long-range" heavy barrel, accurate, scoped rifle is a sniper rifle. There was a link to "sniper rifles"

http://www.vpc.org/graphics/snipcov2.pdf

(It's a pdf file, takes Adobe Acrobat to read, and a minute or two to load, but has some good links to sniper web sites. Fair warning! It's put together by the "Violence Policy Center" . . . make sure you've taken your blood pressure meds!)

-- anyway, gawd forbid we should limit ourselves to short range, whippy barrel, innaccurate, rifles with iron sights . . .

So, mine's a Rem. 700 PSS (police sharp shooter). It's on the "list" of the VPC. Scope is a Springfield Armory Tactical Govt. in 5.56 mm (rangefinder) 4x - 14x 40 mm w/ 80mm shade, Harris pod, Micheal's tactical sling, and even a rack number from when it was enlisted with the Oregon State Police.

Is it a sniper rifle? I'm not a sniper, but I get pretty close sometimes when I'm hunting.

Check out the link . . .

After "sniper rifles" are heavily legislated there will be people gleefully and excitedly applying for class 3 licenses to own them.

Funny, I wasn't aware the US Armed Forces used "50 caliber sniper rifles" in the gulf war.........

What a load of crap...........

I thought the U.S. military did use Barret .50 Cal sniper rifles in the Gulf War.
I think it is good that the VPC is getting on Sniper Rifles. When Elk & Deer hunters realize their 30.06's and scoped .270's are being targeted too, they will think about joining GOA.

They were used in the Gulf. In fact a lot of them were reconditioned and sold. I have seen some on Gunbroker...I'll see if I can find one and post it.

Interesting..........
How extensively where they used?

How extensively were they used?   To the point that the guns out there being sold are considered "high mileage" and quite rough.

It was discussed a bit on the 50 discussion board at biggerhammer at the url http://www.biggerhammer.net/barrett/wwwboard/ and most felt that getting a new or slightly used M82 was much better than getting a heavily worn former military M82 that could use a rebuild.  If that's any indication as to how much use the guns saw in Desert Storm it should say that they were used quite a bit.

You may be right.  I just noticed that the Remington Model 700 is listed in VPC's "Gallery of Sniper Rifles"....

With the recent unpleasant events in the Senate, I wonder if the Feinstein bill will make it out committee this time...

Speaking of Senate defections, McCain is sounding more and more like he's ready to ADMIT to having jumped ship.

(leaked from Finhagshteins office in Kalicommiefornication)

describes a "sniper rifle" to be any firearm, semi-automatic, bolt action or single shot rifle, shotgun, pistol, centerfire, rimfire, ball and powder, that is capable of firing a bullet, projectile, from the end of a barrel of any of the above mentioned weapons with a projectile speed of anything over 10 feet per second at 4 inches from the end of the barrel, is considered to be a "sniper rifle".

Any magnification device, scope, glasses, tv camara, telescope, binoclor, spyglass, eyepiece, monocular that give a magnification above the range of the normal human eye is also considered to be a "sniper rifle".

Any device that can be used as a rest including bi-pods, tri-pods, mono-pods, sand bags, walking sticks, twigs, fences, posts, tree branches, car or truck hoods, is considered to be a "sniper rifle".

Any visual aid that can place an aiming point on a target, crosshairs, circle, red dot, normal iron sights is also considered to be a "sniper rifle".

Now you see why some people, self included,
maintain that a "SniperRifle" is only a sniper
rifle if it is being used by a real mil/police
sniper. With the defection of Jeffords this bill
will probably get out of committee.

Ya know Feinstein packs a CCW.

Wishing that the People's Socialist Republik of Kalifornia would just sort of drop off the continent and into the ocean.

Bush had better veto this crap. (Although the little turd backs bans on importation of high capacity magazines.)

It's the correct way to spell "Snipper Riffle".

Here in the friendly, happy PRK "sniper rifles" are not yet banned. However, something called a "sniperscope" is. Can you even guess what that might be?

Give up? A sniperscope is "any attachment, device or similar contrivance designed for or adaptable to use on a firearm which, through the use of a projected infrared light source and electronic telescope, enables the operator thereof to visually determine and locate the presence of objects during the nighttime"

So even though we serfs may actually have a legitimate need for night vision gear (criminals and varmints are much more plentiful at night), and the law makes an exemption for police officers, it is banned, verbotten, nyet.

Counting down the days...

If you liked the VPC "report" on sniper rifles, you'll LOVE the one on how we're trying to poison our children by exposing them to lead - "Poisonous Pastime" http://www.vpc.org/studies/leadcont.htm

With this one they want to get all shooting ranges closed.

Here you go, you big bunch of stupids, it's a rifle which is suitable for sniping application.
It helps if it is in the hands of a sniper.
In other words it is a rifle used for picking off assholes such as a boss, girlfriend's ex-boyfriend or a crazy ex-girlfriend that won't leave you the hell alone, at long distances
