AP - report

FRANKFORT - Considering "cultural changes" in the population, Gov. Ernie Fletcher said yesterday that he has asked the Kentucky State Police to reconsider its policy prohibiting troopers from sporting visible tattoos. The governor said he asked State Police Commissioner Mark Miller to review the agency's policy regarding tattoos yesterday morning. However, Fletcher did not say what the policy's fate would be.
...
Fletcher also defended his administration's tattoo policy for state parks workers.

Parks workers may have tattoos, but they must not be offensive, Fletcher said. No state employee has been fired for having a visible tattoo, Fletcher said.

"They're not prohibited, and we can give you a copy of that policy," Fletcher said. "It's just the fact that they want to make sure that people present themselves in a professional and non-offensive manner."

Still, parks employees are encouraged to cover up any visible tattoos, Parks Commissioner George Ward said.

A U.S. Navy veteran (working at Burnside Island State Park on Lake Cumberland) claimed in a pending lawsuit that one of the reasons he was fired was for having a tattoo. Parks spokesman Jim Carroll said the employee was fired for violating the dress code by not having his shirttail tucked in.

Fletcher said the parks and the state police policies were unrelated.

I always thought a good test of how dumb someone gets after drinking too much was counting how many firetrucks showed up at the car accident.

I have a tattoo of a scorpion on one side of my neck and an egiptian scarab on the other side,I own and run an auto repair shop (do mostly collision work) and deal with the public all the time and no one I have ever dealt with has ever had a problem with them.Tattoos are not a mark of an evil person,Hell I have quite a bit of cash tied up in my tattoos.Every tattoo represents a place in a persons life,The tattoo of the scorpion represents my wifes birth sign, the scarab is a good luck symbol what is wrong with that.
I think before someone puts down something that someone else does they should at least understand the things they are talking about.

I don't have any problem with restricting an employee's right to have a tattoo, particularly for jobs like law enforcement, maybe you want a cop pulling you over with a fucking burning eyeball in the center of his forehead or some faux celtic crap snaking up his neck and face, I see that stuff and think-WHOOPS the barbarian horde has hit town gun 'em down.(okay not really but I think it looks inappropriate on cops and some other people who have to interact with public)

State's park workers told to clean up

From the Lexington Herald-Leader, Fri My 21 04

Employees must cover up tatoos, remove body piercings, get haircuts

By John Cheves

The next time you see a scraggly, hairy creature in the state parks, it had better be a bear.

Looking to polish the image of the Kentucky Parks Department, Commissioner George Ward on Tuesday announced "a new professional appearance policy that all employees must adhere to."

In an e-mail sent to managers at 50 state parks and historical sites, Ward warned that employees must keep their hair clean and trim (above the collar for men), cover all tattoos (with long sleeves or bandages, if necessary) and remove visible body piercings (except for women's ear rings in the lobe).

Also, shirts must be tucked into pants.

Sounds to me like this guy understands what I want to see when I go to a park.

Well, I know that if I inquire about having some work done, or buying some kind of product, and I see some guy/woman with a bunch of tattoos, or one of those stupid chain link/barbed wire bracelets around their arm/neck/ankle, I always reconsider.

I'm sorry, but thats just the way I feel about them, and the majority of people that I have delt with that have had them are a littel on the slow side.

I on the other hand do not care how many tattoo's you have, I just think they are not a sign of intelligence or good breeding.

You see an opinion is different than making a law.

Tattoos are for convicts and G.I.'s. The trend of other folks getting them (along with piercings) started because people wanted to express their individuality, to show how different they are. Well, now everybody has tattoos and piercings and instead of being different, they all look alike. Now I am a rugged individual. I don't run with the pack. I'm unique. Why? No ink or holes on me that I wasn't born with. Ironic isn't it?

Clearly, some of the people here are still living in the fifties. Having tattoos doesn't mean you are stupid, just like having guns doesn't mean you are crazy.

How can you people spout shit like that and have the nerve to come here and bitch when liberals talk shit about gun owners? Did it ever occur to any of you that some people just like tattoos? I had a friend in the Marine Corps with full sleeves who was finishing a degree in Microbiology.

I've taken out all of my piercings and am glad I never got any tattoos.  My father was in Kore and had the generic soldier tats.  His serial # and SSN tatooed on one arm, a naked woman on the other.  He made me promise never to get one, and I've kept it.  Being stupid by putting holes in my body was fun and acceptable 10 years ago when I was single and a stupid kid fresh out of high school, but it's not the kind of image I want to project now.  It's also not what I want my children doing.

I personally don't think too highly of most people with visible tattoos, especially on neck, face, and breast areas.  I worked at one company for a while where the receptionist had "Andre" tattooed across her chest just above her cleavage.  It was distracting and trashy.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

Why does it bother you so much?  If a person wants to have a tattoo, who cares?  If you don't like them, don't get them.  How does it affect you if someone gets a tattoo or not?

Ever notice that in the 40 - 80 age group, the market for tattoo removal is much larger than the market for tattoos? What does that suggest? It seems to me that getting a tattoo is making a fashion decision permanent, like having a backwards baseball cap sewn to your head.

I have friends with tattoos, and some of them look OK. I certainly don't care what other people paint on their bodies (though I agree that if an employer doesn't want to hire or retain people with tattoos, he shouldn't have to, anymore than he has to keep employees with beards).

The thing that strikes me as odd about tattoos is that despite the fact that people say they are about individuality and/or have some important personal symbolism, they are often in places where the owner will never see them except in a photograph, and are just about always oriented for viewing by others. I mean, if a person has a tattoo on his thigh, it is oriented with the top toward the owner's head, so it's legible to someone facing the owner; it's not upside down so the owner can look down and admire it. Ditto for tattoos on the forearms. That tells me that there is a far more public aspect to tattoos than people are willing to admit. The target audience is strangers on the street, not the owner. That makes me think it is one more "Look at me! I am different!" gimmick like a gangsta's gold teeth.

Every time I see a tattoo I think of my younger days reading National Pornographic magazine. Just can't get those natives out of mi mind. That goes for a all of the metal so often worn today too. Sorry, but marking up the  body is how a lot of older cultures marked their "property" slaves, whores, or what ever.

I have two full sleeves, my entire left leg, 4 on my neck, two in my ear, my hands, feet, fingers, stomach, and chest with tentative plans to probably cover my entire body. (minus the face of course) I've done professional and sales type work requiring a suit and tie for as long as I can remember before I started my own business. I currently have three businesses actually and quite a few employees. I've never had any problem earning the respect or trust of anyone I deal with and usually in a matter of minutes. I would bet my soul I earn more money in just one of my people related businesses in a week than any of you cry baby fags earn in a month. That's obviously not by virtue of being stupid or low class. I'd go one further and wager that within five minutes of meeting me personally your predetermined opinion of me would change or you'd be too cowardly to let me know in person how low class you think I am.

How much do you HAVE?

But you seem to have missed my point. I'm not here to piss on you over money. Money is just a vehicle. My point was that I have done well in life by virtue of my ethics, my intellect, my instinct and my motivation. I am shrewd, yet fair in my dealings with others. When I employ someone I do so with the intent of teaching them how to/helping them become successful themselves , and shaping their values so that they will one day help someone else. A large part of my purpose in life is challenging peoples perspective and helping to create a shift in the perception that "the little guy always gets pissed on by the big guy". My mantra in life is that the only barriers between us and our dreams exist only in our mind. The fact that I deal with people like you and the original poster on a daily basis is testament to that. If I let every person who judged me by my ink set me back I'd have failed a long time ago. The original poster and many after him seem to think people who "mark their body" are low intellegence, low motivation people with less class and "breeding" than those who do not.  You all seem to THINK you know what tattoos are all about, yet those with the strongest opinion don't have any. It brings to mind a picture I've seen of Chuck Schumer shooting a Tec-9......

BTW, the reason that people don't tell others what they think of their appearance isn't "cowardice" (though Hatebreed's word choice tells me something about the real point of his tattoos); it's manners. I for one don't think that tattoos are proof of lowlife status, although even now they are more common among lower economic and social classes. I think they are a personal choice, and generally a poor one. I think they are indicative of an odd desire for attention from strangers, and in many instances are specifically intended to provoke stares, hostility, and/or condescension. Again, if it's all about you, why is it set up for others to "admire?" Shouldn't they all be on parts of your body you can see, and oriented for you to appreciate? They aren't, though. They are there for strangers to see, consider, and respond to. Although I'm sure many tattoos are just an aesthetic display by the owner, I suspect that in many cases they provide a handy excuse for the fact that nobody wants to to talk to the owner. It's easier to ascribe others' aversion to you to the fact that you have tattoos and they are squares, than to accept the fact that you are boring or annoying all on your own.

Wow, where to start responding......

FL1whatever-it-is......

That's convenient that you chose my response to show that "tattooed people belittle not tattooed people for not having ink"

I don't see anything there indicating my assaulting someone based soley on their lack of tattoos. As a matter of fact, I challenge you to show me one thread where I've EVER said anything to or judged someone based on thier physical appearance. My somewhat "angry" response is based in DEFENSE of someone elses opinion of ME having never even met me.

Again, your response shows lack of critical logic in stating why people get tattooed (an excuse to isolate from people). How did you reach your conclusion? Did you survey 1000 tattooed people? Do you have a tattoo? Maybe you reached it by examination of my post alone, you know, the one where I TALK TO PEOPLE FOR A LIVING!

In closing I'm sorry if any of you who are complaining about what I can do with MY BODY were offended by being called a crybaby fag. I should have just let it go like I do the tens of other threads a year where people belittle my life choices having never met me or knowing anything about me. It's always been easier to let the ignorant remain ignorant, it was my mistake forgetting that.

As to you Hielo, I have no need to make a "wager" with you. I said I'd bet my soul figuratively. If you'd really like to see how much I make, for comparative purposes, I think we should make it more fair. I originally offered to bet I make more in one week with one business than you do in a month. That's 1/4 of 1/3 of my income. You being the bigshot you are it wouldn't hurt you any to compare the more of the whole enchilada I'm sure. We can compare all my businesses for a week to yours for a month. Thats still 1/4 of my pay against all of yours. If you really have something to prove, between me and you, I will gladly email you all my wholesale jewelers invoices, ebay sales, and the invoices for my corporation for one week. You don't even have to show me yours. I trust you have enough honor to acknowledge if I make more than you. (not that it really matters) When you see what I do in a weeks time, if it is indeed more than yours for a month, you can come let everyone know, or it can remain none of their business. If I happen to make less, well, you can come boast or it can be just between us. I have nothing to prove, unless you do.
