Screen name?

Police said a code enforcement worker was taking pictures of Sbrusch’s property because he had vehicles parked in his backyard, which is against the city’s code.
The code enforcement worker’s body camera video shows Sbrusch confronting the worker, claiming the vehicles had been there since 2006. The worker is taking the pictures with a tablet from the street, but Sbrusch keeps telling the man to get off his property, footage shows.

A few years back, I heard that a female County "land management" (think code enforcement) employee quit her job after a confrontation with an armed landowner. During a conversation with my attorney regarding an issue with the Land Management Department, I asked him about the story I had heard. He got a strange look on his face and with a bit of a smile, said: "no comment". Question answered!

Those people are cops of a different genre and the same "rules" about dealing with cops apply.

Question: Is a code enforcement "officer" LE as in is armed and has powers of arrest ?   I ask because I had one sort of act like an ass at the local city hall where I lived in FL and when we interacted he was wearing a metal badge on his belt.

Normally metal badges were reserved for actual LE but nowadays who knows, e.g. TSA.

Local code enforcement by me has gotten bad lately. They are trying to make our community look like the extremely wealthy one next door.

Only issue is that it’s never going to be that lol.

Brand new boat in my driveway is an issue but the house at the entrance to the neighborhood with 6 cars parked in the driveway and street isn’t. The house with 2 mobile homes behind it on a 1/2acre lot isn’t. The dude who has probably 2 boats and 6 work vans in his back yard isn’t. It’s nuts.

Maybe the government should just mind it's own business sometimes.

Interesting how governments never seem to have trouble finding power hungry little shits to happily carry out the king's orders.  Must be a good dental plan and cool uniform.

Our County is poor and littered with junky residences and we have meth head issues along with other human issues. I'm working with our Commissioners to use the State laws to enforce a clean up effort. The laws are on the books and through fines we'll be able to hire a code enforcement officer hopefully. When realtors say "I won't list it until that mess up there is cleaned up" it's time to do something about it. The County tax district is on board with it AFTER they capitulated in my case and saw the light about hundreds of other residences using the "trashy residence" reason as a way to lower their taxes which reduces the income for the County. We're all in this boat together and I'm paddling as hard as I can.

It is a free country fortunately and you have the right to move, what you don't have is the right to tell other people how to live their lives. Stay in New York.

Code Enforcement should be ok, only when the county has ensured that their own property has been maintained and is not in violation.

Problem is, government isn't concerned about following their own rules.  Just like many HOA board members...

Honestly don’t really care as long as they’re decent people, and while plenty of potheads not really a meth problem in my neighborhood.

That being said, I HAVE seen more code enforcement vehicles cruising around lately.

We looked at a nice home in Port Charlotte, Fl. The listing-v-the price, looked too good to be true. Once we drove into the neighborhood, we immediately understood why. The house on the corner had obvious fire damage and old mattresses used to cover the broken windows. The landscaping was out of control. The house we were interested in for sale was immaculate but right next door was a dump with junk cars and broken kids toys scattered all over the place. The neighborhood was a mix of decent homes people took pride in and garbage dumps. It was just too damn depressing to consider living there.

Before we left, we asked the agent about the house on the corner with filthy mattresses in place of windows. She was familiar with the property and told us she checked into it. Somebody was paying the taxes so the County wasn’t going to do anything about it.

I understand where you're coming from but a word of caution….you might actually get what you're asking for, which is heavy handed GOV intrusion into your life.  I know it may not seem like that now and you most likely believe that this is all manageable but these things can grow a life of their own.

I just sold a property on the beach in FL and the code enforcement has gotten completely out of control.  They are super aggressive and will write a $50/day fine for grass that was cut a week ago. A friend incurred about a $500 fine when the went on vacation and the guy that was supposed to cut their lawn bailed and never said a word.  Their grass was cut a few days before they left and they were gone 2 weeks…..a beautiful lawn that was maybe 3" too long…..

Another friend got a $1500 fine for what enforcement said were short term rentals, under a month, on a small apartment they had on their property, It seems the renters changed vehicles and the code saw that as a new renter.

Now you'd like to think that this could all be worked out pretty easily right? Well you'd be wrong. The mayor is in bed with all of this and the fines are pretty much rubber stamped by the "judge" that reviews them.  So from what I saw if you got a fine you paid it or you lawyered up and spent thousands of dollars for a couple hundred dollar fine.

Once these small communities get a taste for the money that these fines bring in they can spin out of control. So again be careful for what you ask for because you might get it.

ITT we learn who the closet communist/socialist/whatever-ist are that want to tell everyone else how to live.

That said, environmental hazards and health hazards I agree with looking into. If it's just because you don't like the way something looks then turn your head and look somewhere else.

I'm in the midst of dealing with something similar right now. I'm in the process of 'junking' up the areas of my property that they can see but I can't within the code Then I'm going to use their own code enforcement department against them for their numerous code violations. Phuking hypocrites.

Some years back I had parked my car in my back yard (that was zoned as a parking spot).  It was an '80s model NX.  Great little car that ran fine, but it failed inspection.. something emissions related.  It was there two weeks when I heard a loud noise.  I looked out the window and saw a public works crane dragging it out and down the alley, tearing down my chain link fence as it left.

I called the public works impound lot and they advised that would be $250 for the tow and $20 a day for storage.  The lady said otherwise it would be auctioned off.  I told her to keep it.  It was free to me from an old friend who had no use for it.  The lady got real upset and told me that's not how this works.  I told her good luck at the auction.

Fuck cities.

Would not be surprised if this was a renter.

At my former house the neighbors and I had an issue with a renter (a car on jack stands with a rwd transmission still lying in their front yard after a couple of weeks along with weekly, multi day, "garage sales" at the home among the many concerns).

Fuck code enforcement.

A brief conversation with the property owner/landlord, at his nearby business, solved our problem real quick (turns out the rental bums were late on rent, too)

See ya.

Fuck code enforcement with a rusty rebar.

I live in a nice neighborhood, but code enforcement will still fuck you any chance they get.  Had to deal with them last year because I didn't shovel the sidewalk in front of my house.  It's city property.  I pay taxes.  And those taxes are use to extort me into shoveling city property.

Again, fuck code enforcement with a rusty rebar.

Are threads like this populated with people who are hardcore defenders of property rights because they're not the ones who have to live next door to this shit;
or are they trash themselves, whose homes and properties look like the town dump, so they honestly can't see the problem with people living like that?

I'm fuzzy here and someone will hopefully correct me if I am wrong, this is in FL of course; CE is not law enforcement*, they cannot arrest you, they cannot carry guns, and in fact they are not allowed to come on your property without permission (obviously the public area is exempt, they can walk up to your front door.)

CE got into some shit here a couple of decades or so ago because they were armed and there were blue lights on their vehicles, totally illegal according to State law. The blue lights had to be removed and if they wanted to carry they had to go get a CCW.

CE here ranges from downright lazy AF to "guy on a power trip."

*The way to get around this is to designate a local PD officer as code enforcement, they he can make an arrest and be armed, but he's do so because he has LE credentials, not because he is CE. Here if they have an issue, they have the PD/SD come with them.

You cannot anyomsly put CE on someone anymore, you have to give your name and it is public information. S.FLA is supposedly particularly bad w/ CE, where I live not so much.

It sounds like he is part of the solution. Not everyone wants to live in a trashy neighborhood. Most of the time in my city it is an absentee landlord and a renter that have trashy property.

Derelict cars in yards cause problems with rodent and insect infestation that extend well beyond the property line.
