I am (honestly) just over the Federal poverty level. I make around $1500 a month simply because without Medicaid or a $$$ job with Cadillac benefits, I can't afford the meds that keep me alive. Let alone the fact that medicaid is a fucking trap that is a nightmare to get out of if you are in poor health. It absolutely disgusts me, but to be blunt, short of a miracle job, I'm up shit creek without a canoe or paddle. (Without medicaid, I'd be looking between $16-18k a month in medication bills.) Apparently despite a two page list of what's wrong with me, I don't qualify for disability, or even the medical coverage from disability. Hell, I can't even go to school without losing my medical insurance.
 I finally hit $1k in my 401k this year (pathetic, I know) and it's already down to $874 today after losses. I'm so fucked.  FWIW, I am working on licensing for my work in optical. That'll triple my pay plus let me work full time, but it's still several years out. Oh joy, to be making $40 an hour when I'm turning 40. Assuming I don’t find something better. |

I left a 27 year career as a machinist in a shithole city I hated to work part time retail in an area I love. I am not retired, my part time job pays all the bills. Never been happier. |

I am still on a Samsung Galaxy 8+ that I bought off eBay in 2019ish for $200. When its screen went dead, I then bought a "for parts only" 8+ with a perfect screen and body and swapped in my original hardware from the dead screen phone.
All this so I didn't have to spend the $$$ on a newer phone. So yes, I am a poors. |

My son just found out his rent is going up $300 in July and he can't afford it (housing, even apartments are simply nonexistent in his area). He's your definition of working poor....college graduate, full-time LEO, and he's a 2LT in the National Guard. He's not necessarily poor, just barely makes ends meet and does a lot of gear swapping for his toys. He loves the SWAT-team part of his job, but it's only part-time and he knows he'll have to go a different career path if he wants to have more financial flexibility. Inflation is going to kick a lot of people in the nuts this year if it hasn't already.
