Ohmygod.  I almost spit water all over my screen when I read # 5.

Ever since I moved to Maryland, I have yet to find one person who knew what smelt was.  Also, my first week down here I tried to buy a six pack of beer with a combination of US and Canadian money and they looked at me like I was insane.

And you point to where you live on your "RIGHT" hand.

Michigander in Maryland.

MIerinMD - My wife and I are both from Michigan.  Bath, Lansing, East Lansing, Owosso, Spring Lake, Rainbow Lake specifically.  Graduates of Michigan State!

After a 2 year stint in Southern Oregon, we moved to the Peoples Republik of Maryland in 1990.

We know what smelt is.  You aren't alone.

Remember the guy that did Michigan Outdoors?  Jerry something?  He's my neighbors father in-law and he just moved to MD as well.

hey, yous guys got them smelt in NY too!
http://www.sarep.cornell.edu/Sarep/fish/Osmeridae/osmeridae.html
Only one member of the smelt family-the rainbow smelt-is present in New York. This is a small, slender,
elongate fish averaging 6-8 inches long. This silvery fish has a complete lateral line, relatively large scales, a
large mouth, a forked tail, and an adipose fin.

Sea-dwelling populations of this fish are anadromous, running up freshwater streams to spawn. Freshwater
or landlocked smelts are most important in New York. They are found in Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake
Ontario, the Finger Lakes, and scattered lakes in the Adirondacks. They also are present in Lake George
and Lake Champlain. They are fairly common in the Hudson, particularly in the area midway between
Manhattan and Albany.

Smelt spawn in spring, when large numbers run up tributary streams. Although spawning usually occurs in
streams, in some situations smelt may spawn offshore on gravel shoals. Spawning primarily takes place at
night, with two or more males accompanying one female in riffle areas of the stream or along the lake shore.
The female releases her 10,000 or more adhesive eggs, which stick to the bottom gravel. During spawning
season male smelt have many rough-feeling breeding tubercles on the body which easily distinguish them
from the females.

OK, too much info pal, what I meant was explain "Bucket of Smelt" Anyone got a recipe?
Link Posted: 5/25/2001 5:31:09 AM EDT
[#13]
So true, So true.

Buckets of smelt.  They catch them by netting them with a dip net on the St. Clair river and then they empty the net into a 5 gallon bucket.  On a good night people will get truck loads full.  Then they spend the rest of the nigth cleaning them.  you just gut them and eat the bones and all no need for fillets.

I've never dipped them but have eaten a bucket or too over my lifetime I am sure.  They are excellent when fresh in the spring.

Nothing like fresh water and sand dunes as far as the eye can see!

[#15]
Ah yes, it's been a while since I went smelt drinkin, er ah I mean smelt dipping.

You have to bite the head off the first one you catch every season and swallow it.  It's a saccrafice for the smelt Gods, who live in da UP eh, BTW.

Use a pair of scissors to cut the head off and the belly open.  Flick guts out with your thumb.  A couple of swipes with a tooth brush, rinse, into a plate with salted flour and straight in to the deep fat frier until golden brown.

I'm from Okemos and graduated from Eastern Michigan University.  Moved down here to pay off school loans by working in politics.  BIG MISTAKE.  If it wasn't for my North Carolinian girlfriend, I would move back in a heartbeat.

Do you fry them in oil or butter?

What is the correct ratio of smelt to beer?

I escaped the Democratic Republic of Michigan back in 1997 and set up shop in Arizona (Free America). I miss going to Meijer's at any time I damn well please for any damn thing I want and doing donuts in the snow.

In Meijer's one night, I was examining a shotgun from the case and asked, "you got any ski masks?" I was immediately escorted from the building. Another Meijer's prank was setting every alarm clock in every Meijer's in the Grand Rapids area to go off at the same time. Lot of driving and we never got to see the outcome....

My wife has always wanted to spend a summer on Mackinac Island. Time and money has never allowed it. When I was looking for work in Iron Mountain, I offered her the chance to spend the summer working on the Island, working. Her concern was what were we going to do when summer ran out. "The same thing we're doing now, look for work." She didn't buy it, now the chance is lost.

She didn't miss much. I worked 80-100 hours a week (NOT EXAGGERATED), lived in a slum owned by the hotel, and left the island just as broke as the day I showed up (ok, I drank all my paychecks - but you would, too).
