Browning Auto 5 was a great shotgun in 1902 and it's still a great shotgun now.
Same with the 11-87, etc. |

You mean extinct? The M1 Super 90 was discontinued over a decade ago….
M2 was an improved recoil operated design over the M1 and the M4 is a dual gas system… |

The main difference is furniture change and bullshit marketing. Maybe a little refinement on newer guns but certainly no breakthrough changes.

In some cases, technology improves. In some cases, manufacturers figure out a way to make a product cheaper (but not necessarily better).
A shotgun is a shotgun; it's up to you to decide what features you want, and what price you'll pay. I know guys who think the 11-87 was a downgrade from the 1100, I know guys for whom nothing less than a Krieghoff is acceptable, and dudes who are still using their grandpa's old Auto 5. Personally I think Remingtons are garbage, but that's me. Just as long as you aren't using a Winchester model of 1911, they'll all do. |

I have a 25 year old Browning Sporting Clays Gold…smooth action, softest shooting shotgun I’ve ever shot. Great gun. Firing pins are the only part I’ve ever had to replace on it.
Also have a Remington 1100 Tac 4. Bangs and clangs, scrapes and squeaks like a WW II tank when it cycles. Opposite of “smooth action”. I thought it might smooth out after 4000 rounds, but it really hasn’t. Both have been reliable as long as they don’t get truly filthy….and I run them hard and long between cleanings….that’s why you bring multiple shottys to the range…one quits cycling, break out the other… |

Beretta 1201FP. Eats everything I give it. Super fast, kicks like a mule and runs like a top. Mesa Tactical PG stock makes it the best bang for the buck semi on the market…if you can find them anymore at yesterday prices. Not as soft as gas operated, but none of the problems from some of the gas systems. Would like it to have more capacity, but with as fast as it throws lead down range, it’ll be good for real world events

For what?
Defense, M1S90 and M2 are superior to M4 unless you’ve got a lot of accessories weighing it down. Hunting…switched from A5 to SBE in 1994…never looked back. Also have multiple SBE2s and 3s. Shoot my dad’s Sweet 16 on occasion when I want to shoot purple shells. Love my Berettas also. But day in and day out, Benelli all the things. Everything else is a compromise. |

In recent years I have shot the M1S90, A5. 1100, and a Beretta 1301. The 1301 is really nice and smooth but the others all ran 100%.

M1S90 evolved into the M2 which is still one of the most popular semi-auto shotguns.
When I first started 3-gun 15 or so years ago, it seemed like the M2 and Remington 1100 were the two dominant shotguns. I remember the 1100 fell out of favor pretty quickly. I assumed it was reliability/durability related, but I didn't pay super close attention since I was a Benelli shooter. The FN SLP and later the Remington Versamax were also showing up around that time, so maybe they were just better than the 1100. |

I’d been looking at Browning barrels, but they can be expensive I really didn’t want to cut down the original as it has the flaming bomb proof mark, the shotgun was one of those used to train AA shooters during WWII, and it has all the markings including the FJ Atwood seal of approval on the butt stock. |

I had a Remington 11-87 Police with ghost rings that ran 100% with Remington OO buck
Sold it off 8-9 years back and went to the Benelli M4 The M4 will feed light bird loads or slugs back to back. The Beretta 1301 gen 2 I have has also proven itself. 14” Benelli M4 is still my favorite  Attached File |

It now sports a big gash on the stock from a brior patch. It shoots fast and smooth, with recoil that a baby could handle. But, I still use an 870 for slugs and buckshot. |
