In case you all were wondering, this is what it takes to purchase a handgun in NY state. Its from memory and I’m missing a few steps but you get the idea.
1. Find/schedule appointment to take pistol safety course. 2. Pay/attend pistol training/safety course at state approved club. 3. Find local place to get fingerprinted (usually at a police station that only does it on certain days/times). 4. Get pictures done to submit on application. 5. Drop off application, filled out, with 3 references that live in NY. 6. County sends references letters to be filled out and returned. 7. County sends out notice that everything was turned in, schedules court date. 8. Wait for court date, show up and speak to a judge who will ask questions and determine if you get a permit and what/if any restrictions are on it. Most are restricted for hunting/target practice only. (Judge I saw said he didn’t give unrestricted permits, even to police officers/retired police officers. 9. Wait for judges ruling. 10. Notified of ruling by county clerk by mail. 11. Pick up permit from county clerk. 12. Bring permit to gun store…..you can now touch a gun in NY! 13. “Buy” your gun. Paperwork gets filled out at the store and sent to county clerk. 14. County clerk receives your purchase paperwork and schedules court date. 15. Go to court, get called up to speak to judge for purchase. 16. Judge approves and sends paperwork back to county clerk. 17. County clerk notifies you by mail, purchase form approved. 18. Go to county clerk to pick up your purchase form. 19. Take purchase form to the gun store to pick up your gun. Rinse and repeat from step 13 on for every purchase. I want to say from the time I started until had the purchase in my possession was 5 months. ETA: Another poster brought up something I forgot. Your references need to get their form notarized before sending them back. Also, when I did it the references had to be NY state residents. Just move to NY for a job? Good luck being a weirdo and asking 3 people to be references on your pistol permit. |

Didn't think it could be possible but NY is about 87 times harder than NJ.
|
|
|
last I checked it was 5 references in your county.
tough for a hermit. |
|
Or just steal one from a law abiding citizen like the criminals do.
|
|
Or just talk to the right people in the right neighborhoods and you can get a handgun in a day. It might be a little warm and lacking numbers, but its a way faster process.
Laws don't affect criminals. |

Started the process in upstate NY when I lived there for a 2 year work contract in the 90s.
I did not start right away. Completed the class, lined up references (IIRC, it was 4 references in Buffalo), was ready to file for the court date to appear before a judge. Did not complete the process before I moved away. They make it difficult as a deterrent. As a deterrent, the process works well. Would have been easier for me, since my Glock was staying out of state with my parents the whole entire time. I was really just asking permission to bring my handgun into the state. |

Only lived there a couple years and left as soon as I could. Funny part was when I was there, that was the process for a handgun. I went to a gun store and bought an AR-15 in 20 minutes with 30rd “pre-ban” mags. Had to wait months and jump through 30 hoops for a handgun though. |

Want to buy firearms in a free state.
Go to gun store. Choose firearms you want to purchase. Fill out 4473. Clerk verifies info from DL. Clerk then calls in the federal NICS check (takes less than 3 minutes). Pay clerk and walk out with everything you bought. Buying one or many, handguns or long guns… won’t change the process. Can be in and out of the store in as little as 10 minutes. |
|
I just go to the store, complete a 4473, wait a few mins for the approval, and walk it with it same day.

The FOID is bullshit and the 3-day wait for handguns. However the $10 for a FOID that is good for 10 years is better than a lot of states. We talk shit about IL and Chicago, rightfully so, but IL is “shall-issue” and you can ccw in Chicago. |

Almost a year and a half from my application to when they called me to schedule a meeting with the judge.
By then I had moved. I literally told the deputy that called me to trash the application, I wasn’t moving back, ever. This was back in 2004-2005 timeframe, Monroe Co NY. |

I thought this thread was going to be about how most people buy their handguns in NY. The use of these handguns are in the news most days…mid-day shootouts in the streets.
If they forgot their handguns they just push you onto the subway tracks. What a place to live. Attached File |

What county is that? I’m on LI too and it’s nowhere as bad as that.
Getting the CCW is complicated and has a prolonged wait, but purchasing involves 2 visits to the pistol bureau and 2 visits to the store. The worst part is forgetting the $5 money order so they put gun on your permit. |
|
I forgot the crazy thing When I moved to CT I get a letter on how I transferred the guns to CT and
I have so many days to surrender the physical paper permit I carry in my wallet to the county police |
|
last gun I bought was an HK45c
I went in the store and asked to look at one. Clerk tried to hand it to me. I threw my arms up and yelled 'stop the high pressure sales! I will take it.' Handed the guy my CC and DL and CCW permit was out the door 3 minutes later. |

Of course, we have the FOID, and the State Police are about a year and a half behind processing applications, but we don't have to go before a magistrate, judge, as long as we have our card we're good to go. Not Constitutional at all but not nearly as difficult. Note, a bit different in Chitcago. |

Just to say FUCK NY I may go by a Beretta and a book mybe American Marxist before lunch.
