if your loking for an all around 308 iwould avoids the M96, cause i dont belive their is a 308 version avaliable, maybe im wrong though. how much you wanna spend, you can get a fake G3, cetme, or FAL for aroud 6 or seven, or a nice FAL for 1000, or a M1A

For a solid all-around rugged accurate rifle, the FAL type is superb. I own an Australian Lithgow made L1A1 and it is a great weapon. The DS Arms FAls are also reputed to be excellent, no personal experience however. The M1A/M14 types are also close to my heart but usually recuire much more work for it to shoot VERY accurately. Have also experience with German G3s, all have been very accurate and well made guns, however the G3 type packs more recoil than a FAL or M1A/M14 type one because of the operating mechanism.

I bought a new FN FAL/LAR in 1981 or 1982..it's been kicking ass for 19 or 20 years.. probably 7-9000 rounds through it..still all original...no replacements of any parts yet..still very accurate

Depends what youre partial to? If its the FN then I would stick with a preban but its gonna cost you. Otherwise DS Arms makes a great product. As for the G3, superb weapon although its heavy as my balls and (I have to agree) does have more recoil. I own both a M1A and M1A Scout, both have performed wonderfully and for the money, its nice to have that flash suppressor:).  It really depends on your taste and how much coin you plan on dropping.

Goose

p.s. If I had to choose, I would take my Scout.  Good size, accurate as hell, flash suppressor, and if you look hard enough you can find em for $1000-$1100.

Don't leave out the Armalite AR-10 rifles. These are great guns and they are made in America. The M1A is also a great Rifle as well.
I couldn't make up my mind on a .308 so I have a HK 91,FN FAL 50.63 PARA,M1A Peerless Grade By the guys at Fulton Armory,a Pre Ban Stoner SR-25, and a couple of Armalites. My Robar SR 90 is also in .308 as well. Maybe I'll get myself an M60 next.

I have a Remington PSS in 308, and it sure shoots sweet.  I have a 3rd Gen Springfield Armory 4-14x56 on top.  I tagged up on two deer this past season with it.  I also was dusting prarie dogs out to 400 yds with it during my hunt last summer.  I would definitely recommend it.  I have had an M1A in the past, and would recommend that as well.

I'm partial to the M1A.  I just like the heritage of the rifle.  Mags are awfully pricey though.  I have only handled 1 FAL, but it was POS and I could not easily pull the charging handle back.  This was obviously not representative of most I'm sure.  I must say my M1A is far more accurate than I am.  My girlfriend also has not problem with recoil on it.  I have heard that recoil on the FAL and G3 is a little more harsh.

Nice shooter, dude

I think our board member "Garand Shooter" is trying to find a new home for his G3. Send him an email.

A custom built FAL ($900 - $1300) should fill the bill. Check any of the smiths that post on the FAL Files.

A word of warning: Don't expect much out of a $600 gunshow / discount broker / as is beater.

I have a kick-ass FAL built on an Entreprise receiver with a 17" bbl, counting compensator, with a very good used Steyr barrel.

Entreprise assembled, headspaced and reparked the rifle.

It will shoot under 3" at 100 yards (5 shot group), iron sights, with all ammo. I have shot one group that was 2 7/8" with 4 rounds going into a 7/8" group. That was with Portguese FNM ammo.
I have DSA 2nd generation handguards, SC Hines pistol grip and a "humpback" stock.
I competed at Knob Creek Range last April in the Assault Rifle match and was 32nd out of 104 with it.

The best thing is it weighs exactly the same as a 20" bbl AR 15 with loaded mags. It acutally has better handling than the AR 'cause it is less muzzle heavy.

Recoil is less than a scout M1A1. I have done a side by side compairson and accuracy is identical or better with same.

I have about $800 total in it.

BTW - It has been flawless in operation.

For real kick ass, do try the .308 single shot pistol. All that power in the palm of your hand. Not for the timid.

My Recommendations: M1A for accuracy. DSA SA-58 Medium Contour for almost as accurate (with a scope), and way cool look.....
For a real kick ass "old school" rifle, look around for a NIW LeeEnfield Mk4 No.2, restore her, and have a blast for $300 or less. And the old Lee ain't that shabby in the accuracy department, either.
