ROCKFORD, Ill. — Officers shot and killed a shoplifter who pulled a gun from her purse and wounded three people at a Wal-Mart store Tuesday, police said.
Rockford Police Lt. Charles White said that officers killed the suspect. He did not identify the woman.
Police said the woman was in the store's security office when officers arrived and she pulled a gun from her purse and started firing.
Mary Reinke, a spokeswoman for Rockford Memorial Hospital, said two unidentified people had been taken to the hospital and that one, a woman, was dead. Reinke said the other victim was in fair condition
Two people were being treated in the emergency room at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, spokesman Gregory Alford said. He said both had gunshot wounds in the lower leg and neither appeared to have suffered life-threatening injury.
Tony Williams, a spokesman for Wal-Mart at its headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., said the incident took place in an area where there were no customers.
"We're just very pleased that apparently none of our three employees who were hurt had life-threatening injuries, and that no customers were hurt. And thank goodness it ended very, very quickly," he said.
