Dear Violence Policy Center Action Network Member:

It is now only four months until the federal assault weapons ban will end on September 13, 2004--unless Congress and the President act.  As this deadline draws nearer, the news media is paying increasing attention to the ban, and what it has--and hasn't--accomplished.

There's a growing understanding that the gun industry has almost completely evaded the ban. (LOL) New AK-47s, UZIs, AR-15s, and even MAC-10s are already on our streets and available for use against the police and public.  For the law to actually ban assault weapons, it must be strengthened.

The VPC is working with other national organizations and leading state gun control organizations in support of an assault weapons ban that actually bans assault weapons.  The following is just one of the many news stories the VPC sees each week detailing assault weapon shootings:

Please do what you can, by forwarding this e-mail to others and urging them to join the VPC Action Network by visiting our web site http://action.vpc.org/ctt.asp?u=1423191&l=34922 to spread the message that to truly ban assault weapons, the 1994 law must not only be renewed, but more importantly, strengthened.

As always, we appreciate your support and commitment to stopping gun violence.

"A new analysis of FBI data has found that from 1998 through 2001, one in five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty was killed with an assault weapon."

I would like to know the specific source of this "analysis" cuz im betting its just another one of their outright lies

It is an outright lie.  The FBI statistic states 1 in 5 officers are killed with rifles, period (or maybe longguns in general, incl. shotguns, but I don't remember).  That even includes friendly fire and officers killed with their own trunk-guns.

And it most assuredly does not differentiate between a .270 deer rifle and an AR-15

I got all the info on that VPC "factoid" right here.  (If the link doesn't go to the piece directly, scroll to the entry titled "Agenda?  What Agenda?  Part II)  They "stretched" the definition of "assault weapon" to get their number (unsurprisingly.)
