Which is better for all-around round, .45 Super or 10mm? Assuming similar platforms, what would be your choice?

10mm. You can buy the guns right off the shelf. 45 Super you have to convert yourself. The 10mm Auto borders on 41 Mag ballistics. YOu can get factory loaded 10mm Auto from mild to wild from all the major ammo mfg'rs.

10mm penetrates better. Its better for wild animals and the like.

But, .45 caliber USPf's can fire Supers without modification.

Should have been a little clearer on purpose, this would be for use during hiking, hunting backup / primary, and general 4 footed protection at the farm.

You 10mm guys, a bit of why you would choose the 10 would be helpful please.

Nope, not that I'm aware of, only 357Rem Mag, 41Rem Mag(out of production), and 44Rem Mag.

The out of production LAR Grizzly, which was an oversized 1911, was initially chambered for the 45 Win Mag round, 357Rem Mag, 45ACP; and later for the 10mm Auto, 44 Rem Mag, and 50AE thru conversions kits consisting of barrel, slide stop, magazines, extractor and or ejectors depending on caliber.

10mm penetrates better, has a higher capacity, faster projectiles, and so on and so forth. A 135 at 1600 would probably expand violently in human tissue, and the 220 at 1000 would penetrate through bear better than a .45 ever could.

forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but what is the USPf, and how is it different from the USP? I've seen the designation before, but I never figured out what that last "f" means.

It means USP full-size....and USPc means compact.

Wouldn't a true "all- around round" ALSO include hi capacity # of rounds??

What's the most 10mm you can fit into a gun???

.40 S&W is still my choice for a true "all around" round.

I believe the fullsize Glock 10mm [20? 29?] has a 15 round capacity with prebans.

I'd take the 10 any day.

A 10mm can hold just as many as a .40. Same diameter cartridge, which is the real limiting factor.

10MM for your application. It shoots so much flatter, does not shed velocity as quickly.

Power. Loaded correctly, the 10mm will have the same energy @ 100yards
that a .45ACP +P has at the muzzle

I plan on taking a wild boar with my G20 this year.

edit to add- If you choose the correct handgun, you will have 16 rounds on tap

Glock 20 in 10mm. It's hard to beat 16 rounds of 10mm for carry.

.45 Super. Primarily because they can also shoot .45ACP. Unless sales pick up after September 10mm is a expensive and hard to find round. We shall see. If 10mm sales pick up and the manufacturers bring out a new round of 10mm cartridges with state of the art bullets after the high caps become available again in September that situation may improve.

If I built a .45 Super, it would still normally have RA45TP 230gr +P for a carry load and .45 Super handloads for hunting and such.
