Strike plates on the door jamb and bottom two hinges, all held in place by big, 3.5" screws.
Replaced the cheap ass, flimsy original deadbolt with a big, heavy duty one. It took someone kicking in our front door at 3:30 am for me to realize how flimsy and unsecure our exterior doors were. |

Long screws in the hinges and strike plate is a super cheap and easy security upgrade everyone should do. Just that alone goes a long way in making the door harder to kick in.

Solid door instead of the shit-tastic hollow core that was originally installed, with smaller windows that will NOT allow you to reach over and trip the deadbolt, which is double keyed anyways. (Key is tied to a screw on the wall close to the door.) Other armor for hinges and striker area are a given for my house.

Thanks My mom passed in 2012 and my gal and I went out to San Fran for her wake/celebration party and the morning of, I got a call from ADT saying that my alarm was going off and whether it was me, which I told them no, I was out of town. They called me back 30 minutes later and said they had good news and bad news, so an O-shit moment. The bad news was that a neighbor below me had heard a toilet running and called it in to the HOA people, even though there was no leak. The good news was, was that it was Miami FD and PD trying to get into my unit via the front door and couldn't, so they jimmied open the bathroom window which is alarmed. They couldn't wedge their way through my front door, which is a metal fire door! The BR window is tiny and there are a couple of big speaker boxes (Cornwall size) that I store in that bathtub, so they had to lift up the midget and torpedo him over the boxes, lol! I win! Chris |

I have a steel security door in front of my door. Very common here in AZ.
Even in neighborhoods, like mine, where no one has bars on their windows... have these Security doors. I think the purpose of them is so that when the weather is nice outside... you can leave your interior door open, but keep the Security door closed and locked, preventing entry by passers-by... but allowing air to breeze through. Regardless, they are tough, and are typically mounted on a metal frame that is screwed into the door frame of your home. No one's "Kicking in the door" with these things. Similar to this:  |

there is a film you can put on your windows that helps hold them together, works pretty good. we have it in a few of our commercial rentals and its held the glass together enough that they were not able to gain entry. in 30+ years we never had an issue, last year 4 break ins...and other BS

I remember seeing a video on YouTube where cops were testing a door and using sledgehammers and battering rams and they were unable to bust down the door for 25 minutes. I think they finally started to collapse the concrete wall around the frame when they called it quits. And these guys were whaling on it!

Strike plate screws that hit studs and hinge screws that do the same at a minimum.
Previously on this site I posted my front door replacement - involved a sheet of drywall, a couple 2x4 jackstuds, vertical blocking on 12" centers, 1/8" steel strap, and a fuckton of construction screws. |

Im a general contractor. When I built my own house I told my hardware supplier I wanted a top of the line door lock. His response was why would I need anything stronger than glass.
We all beef up the front door but never consider the sliding door at the rear. As has been mentioned above, the films help. If I ever build another house, laminated glass in all the windows for the win. |
