I really want to get the Xbox live setup. However, I have DSL, and there is no phone jack near the TV, and the computer is in another room. So how can I make all this work?

Get yourself a wireless router and the wireless receiver for the Xbox.

wireless router I understand. And I found this gizmo http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=558&scid=38 but it appears to be $100 +/-

Just get a cheap 802.11b or g router along with the Xbox brand adapter.

So it is $100 regardless of what I do? If I buy this gizmo, I still need the regular router right?

A regular wireless router, yes.

Note that 802.11g is backwards compatible with 802.11b, so you can get a fairly cheap wireless router. The "G" routers are considerably more expensive than "B" models.

[Edit] If you're really trying to save money, just get a bunch of Cat5 cable and run it up through the attic and back down to the Xbox. Probably cost you $10 or $15 for the cable.
