Officers wounded in range accident www.daytondailynews.com/localnews/content/localnews/daily/0506sheriffshoot.html

SIDNEY(OH)  The shootings of two sheriff's deputies at a firing range Wednesday appears to have been an accident, Sheriff Kevin P. O'Leary said.

The shooting occurred at the firing range on Gearhart Road shortly before 2 p.m. as Deputy Scott Atwood was handling a handgun that discharged and caused a slug to go through his left hand and then strike Deputy Dave Spicer in his side.

Atwood was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney, Spicer to Miami Valley Hospital, O'Leary said.

It just occurred to me that these are Fish and Game cops.  Why do they need to train in a "Shoot House"?  The reason stated is Homeland Security, but I can't for the life of me picture terrorist scenarios in buildings out in the damn woods, swamp or on the water. If anything I would assume they need training on one-on-one or one-on-many combat in the open.  These guys have kind of a scary job since they operate alone in the sticks and talk to giys with loaded weapons a lot.  But "building clearance"?

Tierney said a dozen officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Special Operations Group were training on Thursday at the range, which the Withlacoochee Technical Institute operates. The training complex is on the south side of State Road 44 just west of the landfill entrance.

She said the officers were participating in a "building clearance" exercise. In an open-air "house," a group of four officers with long guns and handguns entered and cleared the first room, then entered a second room. Weapons were drawn and a shot was fired...
